On the occasion of the Metamorphosis exhibition on the work of the American James Welling, the Thinking Tools research group (Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen) is organising a study day on ‘the photographic’ in association with S.M.A.K.

In both his documentary pictures and his more experimental light and colour studies, Welling seems always to be making a theme of the photographic eye itself. His images stimulate us to reflect on the relationship between the camera and the world, between operator and apparatus, and between science and art. His contrary and varied oeuvre thus offers the perfect opportunity to explore the notion of ‘the photographic’ in greater depth. For this purpose, Thinking Tools and S.M.A.K. are bringing together a select group of photographers, critics and curators.
