The Dreams of Stafford Beer

NL - Een sleutelfiguur in het werk van Mario Navarro is Stafford Beer (°1926, Londen, Verenigd Koninkrijk - +2002, Toronto, Canada). Beer was een Brits wetenschapper en een van de grondleggers van de cybernetica, die in 1971 op verzoek van toenmalig Chileens president Salvator Allende een futuristisch technologisch systeem ontwikkelde dat de Chileense economie in real time moest besturen vanuit een centrale ‘operation room’. Dat moest gebeuren volgens geprogrammeerde algoritmes die vergelijkbaar zijn met deze die nu door zoekmachines zoals Amazon en Google worden gebruikt. ‘The Dreams of Stafford Beer’ (2008) toont een fictiefilm waarin Beer te zien is, die, eenzaam in een hotelkamer, met knullig tekenmateriaal zorgvuldig het negenarmige grondplan van de ‘operation room’ probeert te tekenen. De videofilm wordt doorgaans getoond in combinatie met Navarro’s reusachtige ‘Logo’ (2008) dat hetzelfde grondplan verbeeldt. Het werk toont op poëtische, existentiële wijze de nostalgische keerzijde van dergelijke Latijns-Amerikaanse utopische projecten. Het werd in 2020 door Navarro aan de collectie van S.M.A.K. geschonken naar aanleiding van zijn deelname aan de groepstentoonstelling ‘The Cybernetics of the Poor’ in de Kunsthalle Wenen in datzelfde jaar.

ENG – A key figure in the work of Mario Navarro is Stafford Beer (b. 1926, London, UK – d. 2002, Toronto, Canada). Beer was a British scientist and one of the founders of cybernetics. In 1971, at the request of the then-president of Chile, Salvator Allende, he developed a futuristic technological system designed to steer the Chilean economy in real time from a central ‘operation room’. The idea was to achieve this by means of programmed algorithms, comparable to those now used by search engines such as Amazon and Google. ‘The Dreams of Stafford Beer’ (2008) shows a fictional film in which Beer is depicted alone in a hotel room, carefully trying to draw the nine-branched floorplan of the operation centre using amateurish drawing materials. The video film is usually shown in combination with Navarro’s giant 'Logo' (2008) that depicts the same flooplan. The work shows the nostalgic flipside of these kinds of utopian Latin American projects in a poetic, existential manner. It was donated to the S.M.A.K. collection in 2020 by Navarro. This was also the year in which he participated in the group exhibition ‘The Cybernetics of the Poor’ in the Kunsthalle Vienna.

En 1971, il a développé, à la demande du président chilien de l’époque Salvador Allende, un système technologique futuriste qui devait diriger l’économie chilienne en temps réel depuis une ‘operation room’ centrale. Tout devait fonctionner d’après des algorithmes comparables à ceux qui sont utilisés aujourd’hui par des moteurs de recherche comme Amazon et Google. ‘The Dreams of Stafford Beer’ (2008) se compose d’un film de fiction dans lequel on voit Beer, seul dans une chambre d’hôtel, en train d’essayer de dessiner minutieusement, avec du matériel de dessin rudimentaire, le plan à neuf branches de son ‘operation room’. Le film vidéo est généralement présenté en combinaison avec le ‘Logo’ (2008) géant de Navarro, qui représente le même plan. L’œuvre illustre de façon poétique et existentielle le revers nostalgique de tels projets latino-américains utopiques. En 2020, Navarro a fait don de l’œuvre à la collection du S.M.A.K. à l’occasion de sa participation à l’exposition collective ‘The Cybernetics of the Poor’ à la Kunsthalle de Vienne la même année.
