On the closing day of 'the Shore / a place I'd like to be', you can attend a musical performance by four talented young sound improvisers and musicians in the rooms.
Tarek Atoui: The Shore / a place I’d like to be is more than just an exhibition. It also serves as a sound landscape, workshop, meeting space and platform for (musical) performances. At the opening event, Tarek Atoui gave a bewitching live performance using the instruments in the space. To mark the close of the project on 25 August, there will be a second musical performance by four talented young sound improvisers and musicians: Yara Asmar, Kid Fourteen (Khodor Ellaik), Mattias De Craene, and Nathan Ysebaert. Using their own instruments, personal interventions and collaborative improvisation, they will engage in a dialogue with the instruments present and expand Tarek Atoui’s original electronic compositions into a new sonic landscape and a unique listening experience.
Tarek Atoui’s artistic practice is rooted in experimentation and collaboration. Together with researchers, craftspeople, and musicians, he explores how sounds are experienced in multisensory ways; how they are influenced by social, historical or spatial parameters; and how they can serve as catalysts for human interaction.
For this happening, which makes connections between the exhibition, objects and people, Tarek Atoui and S.M.A.K. collaborate with Splinter vzw. This Ghent-based organisation supports and enhances artistic initiatives in a range of disciplines and media. In collaboration with organisations and institutions which thrive on creativity, innovation and inclusivity, they create opportunities for exchanges between international artists and local projects. Propelled by the potential of artistic expression and cultural exchange, they engage specific target groups, encourage participation, and initiate meaningful dialogues. Firas El Hallak, who is both a visual artist and Artistic Director of Splinter vzw, selected the artists and curates the musical performance.
