More information

Since September 2015, the Secundair Kunstinstituut (SKI), De Rode Antraciet and S.M.A.K. have been working together on a project with inmates from the prison in Ghent.

Every month, a group of students from the SKI travels to the prison to draw with the inmates in a series of art books. During the workshops, the detainees are invited to draw in these books. What they draw is free to them. The main point is to invite them to feel free to get started and express themselves in this medium. After the workshops, the books will be included in the prison's library and the inmates who wish to do so can also continue drawing in their cells themselves. Students from the Secondary Art Institute also draw in these books and respond to the detainees' drawings. This creates a lively, visual dialogue of very diverse drawings.

The aim of the project is to invite detainees to express themselves through drawing. Working with them creates mutual interest and respect. For the detainees, it is a fun and educational activity within their further programme. With the project, we want to make a positive contribution to the image of prisoners.

When the books are finally full, they will be exhibited at S.M.A.K. and then hopefully travel.
