How to preserve an iconic artwork? S.M.A.K. shows the conservation history of Joseph Beuys’ Wirtschaftswerte

This summer, S.M.A.K. highlights the conservation history of Joseph Beuys' iconic Wirtschaftswerte (1980). Visitors will discover not only a landmark work from the museum's collection, but also the story behind its care and preservation. Presented in conjunction with the 31st Congress of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC), the exhibition explores the artwork's conservation history and offers insight into the challenges of conserving and restoring contemporary art.

Meg Stuart takes over S.M.A.K. for seven weeks of experimentation

Under the banner mystery loves company choreographer Meg Stuart and her company Damaged Goods will inhabit S.M.A.K. for a residency from 21 september until 7 november 2026. Stuart brings together a wide group of people – from artists and filmmakers to choreographers and costume designers – cultivating a space for experimentation, gathering and reflection, in close dialogue with the museum’s infrastructure.

Ana Lupas solo exhibition as an artistic testament

S.M.A.K. presents a major solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Ana Lupas (b. 1940, Cluj-Napoca, Romania), widely considered to be one of the most significant artists of her generation in Eastern Europe. The presentation surveys a vast selection of works, revisited from the later stage of the artist’s career and life, serving as an artistic testament.
