Through an open call by the Flemish Government Architect, the Ghent urban development company sogent is looking for a multidisciplinary design team to make the expansion of S.M.A.K. a reality. That team should draw up the design of a renewed S.M.A.K., incorporating the current building on the one hand and the Casino end of the Floraliënhal on the other side of the building cluster.

Thanks to the Open Call, we can prepare the dossier for incoming administration teams of the Flemish Government and the City of Ghent, starting in 2024. We are laying the groundwork so that they can then decide to give the final green light to this project.” Sami Souguir, Alderman for Urban Development, Chairman of sogent.

On 1 July 2023, current president of the Friends of S.M.A.K., Jan Op de Beeck (71), will pass the torch to new president Bruno Matthys (48).

With this presidency, Bruno Matthys follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Roger Matthys, who played an important role in the founding of S.M.A.K. Bruno Matthys on the future of the Friends: "The focus must remain on promoting S.M.A.K., publishing art editions and organising activities around and with artists. But above all: we are pushing for a new and bigger museum!"

Bruno Matthys is particularly grateful to outgoing chairman Jan Op de Beeck for his brilliant work over the past few years.
