Neither Forget your Legs

NL – Vrouwenbenen in nylons op hoge hakken behoren tot de favoriete motieven van Jones. De kunstenaar schilderde oneindige variaties op dit soort seksueel getinte beelden. Inspiratie ervoor haalde hij uit zijn persoonlijke collectie van foto’s uit seks- en modebladen. De kunstenaar bewerkte en stileerde bestaande foto’s van vrouwen tot er nieuwe beelden ontstonden. In dit werk ligt het accent op de erotische fragmenten: de rozige dijen, de minirok en de hoge hakken. In combinatie met de frisse kleuren en de beweging van de benen vormen ze een sterk zintuiglijk, prikkelend beeld. Het formicaplankje dat de kunstenaar onderaan het schilderij bevestigde, lijkt de vloer te zijn waarop de vrouw zich beweegt en het realiteitsgehalte van het geheel te verhogen. Anderzijds zijn de benen zo geraffineerd weergegeven dat ze onpersoonlijk overkomen: eerder als seksuele fetisj dan als fragment uit de werkelijkheid. Dit spanningsveld is typisch voor Jones’ werk.

ENG – Women’s legs in stockings and high heels are among Jones’ favourite motifs. The artist painted endless variations on sexually-charged images of this kind. He found inspiration for the works in his personal collection of photos from sex and fashion magazines. Jones edited and styled existing photos of women until new images emerged. In this work, the emphasis lies on the erotic fragments: the rosy thighs, the miniskirt and the high heels. In combination with the fresh colours and the movement of the legs, they create a profoundly sensual, stimulating image. The Formica plank that the artist affixed to the lower edge of the painting is, as it were, the floor upon which the woman is positioned, and this serves to increase the work’s overall realism. On the other hand, the legs are depicted in such a refined way as to seem impersonal: more like a sexual fetish than a fragment from reality. This tension is typical of Jones’ work.

FR – Un des thèmes favoris de Jones était les jambes des femmes en bas nylon et perchées sur de hauts talons. L’artiste a peint des variations infinies de ce genre de reproductions à connotation sexuelle. Il s’inspirait de sa collection personnelle de photos issues de magazines de sexe et de mode en transformant et stylisant des photos existantes de femmes pour en faire de nouvelles reproductions. Cette œuvre souligne les fragments érotiques: les cuisses roses, la mini-jupe et les hauts talons. Combinés à des couleurs gaies et au mouvement des jambes, ils forment une création très sensorielle et excitante. La petite planche en formica fixée par l’artiste sous la peinture donne l’impression du sol sur lequel la femme évolue et renforce l’aspect réaliste de l’ensemble. Par ailleurs, les jambes sont reproduites avec un raffinement tel qu’elles paraissent impersonnelles, plutôt comme un fétiche sexuel que comme un fragment de la réalité. Ce champ de tension est caractéristique de l’œuvre de Jones.
