Seven Objects each 1 ell

NL – Op deze tafel heeft de kunstenaar verschillende materialen samengebracht, elk met de lengte van 1 el, een oude maat gebaseerd op de lengte van het deel van een menselijke arm tussen elleboog en hand. Het werk is een voorbeeld van brouwns ‘schaalobjecten’, waarmee hij in de jaren ‘90 zijn onderzoek naar de verhouding tussen subjectief ervaarbare en objectief meetbare afstand niet langer enkel op papier maar ook sculpturaal presenteerde. De lengte van een el is afhankelijk van land tot land: een Vlaamse el is 27 inches lang, een Schotse 37 en een Engelse 45. Geen enkele van deze ‘officiële’ els komt overeen met de feitelijke lengte van deze materialen, nl. 47 inches of de ‘stanley brouwn-el’ waarvoor het lichaam van de kunstenaar als maatstaf diende.

ENG – On this table the artist has brought together different objects, each with the length of 1 ell, an old measurement system based upon the length of the human arm between the elbow and the hand. This work is an example of brouwn’s 'scale objects', with which in the 1990s he not only presented his research into the relationship between subjectively and objectively measuring distance on paper, but additionally used sculptural presentation as well. The length of an ell varies between countries: a Flemish ell is 27 inches long, a Scottish 37 and an English 45. None of these 'official' ells corresponds to the actual length of these objects, which is 47 inches, or the 'stanley brouwn-ell', for which the artist’s body served as a standard.

FR - L’artiste a réuni différents matériaux sur cette table, chacun d’une longueur d’1 aune, ancienne mesure basée sur la longueur de la partie d’un bras humain entre le coude et la main. L’oeuvre est un exemple des ‘objets d’échelle’ de brouwn, avec lesquels il présenta dans les années ’90 son étude du rapport entre la distance ressentie subjectivement et mesurable objectivement non seulement sur papier, mais aussi par la sculpture. La longueur d’une aune varie d’un pays à l’autre: une aune en Flandre a une longueur de 27 pouces, 37 pouces en Ecosse et 45 pouces en Angleterre. Aucune de ces aunes officielles ne correspond à la longueur effective de ces matériaux, à savoir 47 pouces ou ‘l’aune stanley brouwn’ pour laquelle le corps de l’artiste a servi de norme.
