NL - In dit abstracte werk paste Lichtenstein de ‘Ben-Day-stippen’ toe. Hoewel hij ze met de hand schilderde, beoogde hij een industriële sfeer. De minutieuze schildertechniek zorgt voor een vlak uiterlijk en laat weinig aan het toeval over. En dat was precies de bedoeling: deze schilderijen dienden als tegengewicht voor het abstract expressionisme, waarin schilders hun penseelstreken zagen als de directe veruitwendiging van hun emoties.

ENG - In this abstract work, Lichtenstein made use of his characteristic "Ben-Day dots". Although he painted them by hand, he sought to create an industrial feel. Through the meticulous painting technique, the painting acquires a flat appearance without any traces of spontaneity or chance. This was precisely what the artist intended: these paintings served as a counterpoint to Abstract Expressionism, in which the painter’s brushstroke was seen as as a direct expression of the artist’s emotions.

FR - Dans cette œuvre abstraite, Lichtenstein a appliqué les « points Ben-Day ». Bien qu’il les ait peints à la main, il a cherché à créer une atmosphère industrielle. La minutieuse technique picturale crée un aspect lisse et ne laisse que peu de place au hasard, ce qui était précisément son intention : ces tableaux faisaient office de contrepoids à l’expressionnisme abstrait, dans lequel les peintres considéraient leurs coups de pinceau comme l’extériorisation directe de leurs émotions.
