Casting Start

NL - ‘Casting Start’ (2019) maakt deel uit van een recentere reeks schilderijen met als titel ‘The Dog’, waarin van den Broek zijn nabije omgeving als onderwerp neemt. Tijdens wandelingen (met de hond) door de velden in zijn nabije leefomgeving, maakte hij foto’s van de natuur en het landschap met hetzelfde scherpe oog als hij dat eerder deed in de ruwe landschappen van Californië of in steden zoals Los Angeles en New York. In ‘Casting Start’ figureert een verdord blaadje, dat nog net lijkt te balanceren tussen leven en dood, tussen blijven en gaan. Door de enorme schaalvergroting en het treffende kleurgebruik verheft van den Broek dit onooglijk fenomeen van een afstervend herfstblaadje uit zijn dagelijkse banaliteit. Net zoals in vroeger werk, waaronder in zijn bekende ‘Cracks’ en ‘Borders’, vestigt van den Broek ook hier via zijn zeer eigen schilderkunstige taal de aandacht op alledaagse dingen in onze leefomgeving. Zo wordt dit ene blaadje uit de jaarlijks miljarden afstervende herfstblaadjes op een roerende manier verheven tot een universeel gegeven, en wordt het in al zijn nietigheid in het licht van de overweldigende natuur en kosmos misschien net de protagonist in het hele verhaal. ‘Casting Start’ werd in 2021 geschonken door de kunstenaar. In 2010 vond in S.M.A.K. van den Broeks grote solotentoonstelling ‘Curbs & Cracks’ plaats. Zijn destijds meest recente werk in de museumcollectie werd via aankoop verworven en dateerde van 2008. De recente samenwerking tussen de kunstenaar en S.M.A.K. in 2021 voor de extra muros-tentoonstelling ‘No More Boring Art!’ in PXL Mad School of Arts Hasselt (waar van den Broek schilderkunst doceert) bracht nieuw gesprek op gang over de vertegenwoordiging van zijn werk in onze collectie, waarna de kunstenaar besloot om dit schilderij aan S.M.A.K. te schenken, ter aanvulling op de van zijn hand al aanwezige werken in de museumcollectie.

ENG – ‘Casting Start’ (2019) belongs to a more recent series of paintings entitled ‘The Dog’, for which van den Broek turned his attention to his immediate surroundings. Whilst walking (with the dog) through fields near his home, he took photographs of nature and the countryside with the same sharp eye as he had previously done in the raw landscapes of California, or in cities such as Los Angeles and New York. ‘Casting Start’ features a withered leaf, which still appears to be hovering between life and death, between staying and going. Thanks to the enormous scaling-up and the striking use of colour, van den Broek lifts the unsightly phenomenon of a dying leaf from its everyday banality. Just as in earlier work, such as the well-known ‘Cracks’ and ‘Borders’, the artist focuses the attention on everyday items in our surroundings with his own highly unique painterly language. This one leaf, out of the billions of dying autumn leaves each year, is therefore elevated to the universal. Given its nullity in relation to the overwhelming scale of the natural world and the cosmos, it might even become the protagonist in the entire story. ‘Casting Start’ was donated by the artist in 2021. In 2010, van den Broek’s large-scale solo exhibition ‘Curbs & Cracks’ was staged at S.M.A.K. At the time, his latest work was purchased for the museum collection and dated from 2008. The recent collaboration between the artist and S.M.A.K. in 2021 for the off-site exhibition ‘No More Boring Art!’ at PXL Mad School of Arts Hasselt (where van den Broek teaches painting) fuelled a new debate about the representation of his work in the collection, upon which the artist decided to donate this painting to S.M.A.K. to supplement the works already held by the museum.

FR – ‘Casting Start’ (2019) fait partie d’une récente série de peintures intitulée ‘The Dog’, dans laquelle van den Broek prend son environnement direct comme sujet. Lors de ses promenades (en compagnie de son chien) dans les champs à proximité de chez lui, il a pris des photos de la nature et du paysage avec le même œil aiguisé que lorsqu’il photographiait les étendues sauvages de la Californie ou encore des villes comme Los Angeles et New York. ‘Casting Start’ représente une feuille d’automne qui semble balancer entre la vie et la mort, entre rester et tomber. En exagérant l’échelle de l’image et en faisant un usage saisissant de la couleur, van den Broek élève ce phénomène insignifiant d’une feuille d’automne en train de mourir au-dessus de la banalité quotidienne. Comme précédemment dans ses célèbres ‘Cracks’ et ‘Borders’, van den Broek fixe ici notre attention, par le biais de son langage pictural très personnel, sur les choses banales de notre environnement. Cette unique feuille parmi des milliards de feuilles mortes est ainsi élevée de façon émouvante au rang de donnée universelle et devient, elle qui est infime par rapport à l’immensité de la nature et du cosmos, précisément le protagoniste de toute l’histoire. ‘Casting Start’ a été offerte en 2021 par l’artiste. En 2010, le S.M.A.K. a accueilli la grande exposition solo de van den Broek ‘Curbs & Cracks’. Son œuvre le plus récente dans la collection du musée à l’époque a été acquise par achat et datait de 2008. La récente collaboration entre l’artiste et le S.M.A.K. pour l’exposition extra muros ‘No More Boring Art!’ à la PXL Mad School of Arts de Hasselt (où van den Broek enseigne la peinture) a enclenché un nouveau dialogue sur la représentation de ses œuvres dans notre collection, à l’issue duquel l’artiste a décidé d’offrir ce tableau au S.M.A.K., pour venir compléter ses œuvres déjà présentes dans la collection du musée.
