S.M.A.K. Collection
NL - In 2016 werden in Gent twee veelbesproken kunstwerken op de Korenmarkt geïnstalleerd. Een van die twee werken is ‘HD400’ van Ann Veronica Janssens, een enorme zuil van 20 meter hoog. De titel refereert aan de wereld van de bouw; met name het type van steunbalk dat de basis vormt in vele hedendaagse bouwwerken. De kunstenaar brengt hiermee een eerbetoon aan de hedendaagse architectuur, die ze zo in dialoog laat gaan met de 13e-eeuwse Sint-Niklaaskerk. Zoals altijd in Janssens’ werk speelt ook hier het (spel met het) licht een belangrijke rol. De enorme, in de hoogte schietende sculptuur is zowel massief als licht. Dankzij het reflecterende oppervlak neemt ze niet alleen ruimte in in de omgeving, maar weerspiegelt ze ook de omgeving in de ruimte die ze inneemt. Hierdoor ontstaat een paradox tussen materialiteit en immaterialiteit. Dit werk ‘HEM600’ in gepolijst staal geldt als schaalmodel voor de uiteindelijke ‘HD400’ en werd ter gelegenheid van de plaatsing van ‘HD400’ in het Gentse stadscentrum, en naar aanleiding van Janssens’ tentoonstelling in S.M.A.K. in 2016 door de kunstenaar geschonken aan de collectie van het museum.
ENG - Ann Veronica Janssens (b. 1956, Folkestone) is a Belgian artist who belongs to a generation of sculptors that is trying to radically rethink the medium in terms of a more sensual and physical experience of art. Her artistic visual language often circles around the immaterial, the fleeting and the ephemeral. Light and optical and sensual experiences are central tenets of her work.
In 2016, two much-debated artworks were installed on the Korenmarkt in Ghent. One of these was ‘HD400’ by Ann Veronica Janssens, an enormous 20-metre-high column. The title refers to the world of construction; namely the type of support beam that underpins many modern structures. Here, the artist pays tribute to contemporary architecture, which she thereby causes to enter into dialogue with the thirteenth-century Saint Nicholas Church. As is always the case in Janssens’ work, the (interplay with) light also performs an important role here. The enormous sculpture shooting into the air is both solid and weightless. Thanks to the reflective surface, it not only takes up space in its surroundings but also mirrors them. A paradox is hereby created between materiality and immateriality. This work in polished steel, ‘HEM600’, serves as a scale model for the final version of ‘HD400’. Janssens donated the works to the museum collection in 2016, the year of both her exhibition at S.M.A.K. and the installation of ‘HD400’ in the heart of Ghent.
FR - Ann Veronica Janssens (°1956, Folkestone) est une artiste belge qui fait partie d’une génération de sculpteurs qui tente de repenser radicalement la sculpture de manière à proposer une expérience plus sensorielle et physique de l’art. Son langage artistique fait souvent appel à l’immatériel, l’évanescent, l’éphémère. La lumière et les expériences optiques et sensorielles sont des notions centrales dans son œuvre.
En 2016, deux œuvres ont été installées sur le Korenmarkt, où elles ont beaucoup fait parler d’elles. L’une d’elles est « HD400 » d’Ann Veronica Janssens, une énorme colonne de 20 mètres de haut. Le titre fait référence au monde de la construction, plus précisément au type de poutrelle qui constitue le squelette de nombreux bâtiments contemporains. L’artiste rend ainsi hommage à l’architecture contemporaine, qu’elle fait entrer en dialogue avec l’église Saint-Nicolas du xiiie siècle. Comme toujours chez Janssens, la lumière et le jeu de la lumière ont un rôle important. La gigantesque sculpture qui s’élève vers le ciel est à la fois massive et légère. Grâce à sa surface réfléchissante, elle n’occupe pas seulement de l’espace dans l’environnement, mais elle reflète aussi l’environnement dans l’espace qu’elle occupe, créant ainsi un paradoxe entre matérialité et immatérialité. Ce « HEM600 » en acier poli est le modèle réduit de la sculpture « HD400 » proprement dite et a été offert par l’artiste à la collection du musée à l’occasion de l’installation de « HD400 » dans le centre de Gand et de l’exposition de Janssens au S.M.A.K. en 2016.
