On the occasion of his solo exhibition 'The Passenger', Bendt Eyckermans is given carte blanche to curate a film program at Sphinx Cinema.
For his selection, Bendt drew inspiration from the work of Harry Kümel. He chose De Komst van Joachim Stiller (The Arrival of Joachim Stiller) and Malpertuis, two films in which he sees parallels with his own paintings. Just like in Kümel's films, a mysterious, almost magical-realist atmosphere hangs over his work.
He translates everyday scenes from his studio or the street into compositions that leave room for suggestion and mystery. The locations also play a role in his choice: De Komst van Joachim Stiller is set in Antwerp, the city where Bendt lives, while Malpertuis takes place in Ghent, the city where he is exhibiting The Passenger.
Even before David Lynch's Twin Peaks, Harry Kümel pushed the boundaries of television drama. This three-part series – presented here as a single film – is an adaptation of Hubert Lampo's novel of the same name. De komst van Joachim Stiller immerses you in magical realism, as an Antwerp journalist becomes increasingly obsessed with the mysterious Joachim Stiller.
