NL - Onder de artiestennaam Vedovamazzei werkt het Italiaanse kunstenaarsduo Stella Scala (°1964) en Simeone Crispino (°1962) sinds 1991 samen. Als bij toeval botsten ze in Napels op dit pseudoniem, dat hen pronkend op een straatbord bekoorde.
Het duo verkent verschillende media zoals schilderkunst, sculptuur, fotografie en installaties. Hun werk, balancerend tussen ernst en ironie, reflecteert op humoristische wijze over de hedendaagse maatschappij. Thema’s zoals identiteit en gevoelens als onzekerheid spelen hierin een centrale rol. Door beeld, object en tekst te combineren, creëren ze verwarring en misleiding, waarmee ze toeschouwers confronteren met hun onvermogen om betekenis te geven aan een beeld.
Trees is een riem (een oude handelsmaat) van 500 vellen papier, gemaakt tussen 1993 en 2000. Op de zijde van de riem, getekend met inkt, vormen de vellen samen het bomenlandschap zoals te zien op de achtergrond van De annunciatie (1472) van Leonardo Da Vinci. Het werk lijkt bovendien te alluderen op het concept van het flipbook in de animatiekunst waarbij opeenvolgende beelden de illusie van beweging creëren. Het beeld bij Vedovamazzei is evenwel meteen leesbaar, in tegenstelling tot het dynamische karakter van het flipbook.
FR - C’est sous le pseudonyme de Vedovamazzei que les artistes italiens Stella Scala (1964) et Simeone Crispino (1962) travaillent en duo depuis 1991. À Naples, ils sont tombés comme par hasard sur ce nom, qui s’étalait sur un panneau dans la rue et qui les a séduits.
Le duo explore divers médiums tels que la peinture, la sculpture, la photographie et les installations. Leurs œuvres, qui oscillent entre sérieux et ironie, se veulent une réflexion humoristique sur la société contemporaine. Des thèmes comme l’identité et des sentiments comme l’incertitude y jouent un rôle central. En combinant image, objet et texte, ils créent la confusion et sèment le doute, de sorte que les spectateurs sont incapables de donner un sens à l’image.
Trees est une rame (un ancien format commercial) de 500 feuilles de papier, fabriquée entre 1993 et 2000. Sur le côté de la rame, les feuilles forment ensemble un paysage arboré, dessiné à l’encre, comme celui qui figure à l’arrière-plan de L’Annonciation (1472) de Léonard de Vinci. L’œuvre semble de surcroît faire allusion au concept de flipbook ou folioscope dans l’art du dessin animé, où des images qui se succèdent créent l’illusion du mouvement. Chez Vedovamazzei, l’image est cependant directement lisible, contrairement au caractère dynamique du flipbook.
ENG - Italian artist duo Stella Scala (b. 1964) and Simeone Crispino (b. 1962) have been collaborating under the professional name Vedovamazzei since 1991. By a twist of fate, they discovered their pseudonym in Naples. The artists saw the word on a street sign, and it captured their imaginations.
The duo explores different media such as painting, sculpture, photography and installations. Balancing between seriousness and irony, their work offers a humorous reflection on contemporary society. Themes such as identity and feelings of insecurity play a central role. By combining image, object and text in confusing and deceptive ways, they confront viewers with their inability to interpret the artwork.
Trees is a ream of paper (an old trade size, comprising 500 sheets) made between 1993 and 2000. On the side of the ream, the individual sheets form a picture, which has been drawn in ink. The scene is the wooded landscape from the background of The Annunciation (1472) by Leonardo Da Vinci. Moreover, the work seems to allude to flipbooks and animation art, whereby successive images create the illusion of movement. Yet Vedovamazzei’s image is instantly readable, in contrast to the dynamic nature of a flipbook.
