A State Before-Religion

NL – ‘A State Before-Religion’ is een reeks fotogrammen van Halász. Een fotogram is een afdruk van een voorwerp dat in een donkere kamer direct op lichtgevoelig materiaal wordt gelegd en belicht. Met de felle zwart-witcontrasten wil Halász ons op een heel directe manier aanspreken. Rond eenvoudige beelden van onder meer handen, hoofden en oren, wekt hij een mysterieus-religieuze sfeer op. In de ‘toestand voorafgaand aan religie’ zijn volgens de kunstenaar alle dingen ‘gelijk en concreet’. Halász wil ons aanzetten tot denken over aloude betekenissen en handelingen. De keuze voor fotogram is bewust: het is een beschikbaar en makkelijk verhandelbaar medium, en de reden waarom hij ook soms werk maakt in de vorm van bv. brieven, foto’s en video’s. Deze media laten hem toe om zijn artistieke ideeën vlug te formuleren en vlot te verspreiden. Halász en zijn Hongaarse tijdgenoten willen op de eerste plaats met ons in dialoog gaan, ons doen nadenken en met hun kunst aanzetten tot maatschappelijke verandering.

ENG – 'A State Before Religion' is a series of photograms by Halász. A photogram is a print of an object produced in a dark room, whereby the object is placed on light-sensitive material and then very briefly exposed directly to light. Thus utilizing the resulting vivid black-and-white contrast Halász wants to appeal to us in a very direct way. His simple images of hands, heads and ears elicit a mysteriously religious atmosphere. In the ‘situation prior to religion‘, the artist reasons that all things were 'equal and concrete'. Halász wants to encourage us to think about antiquated meanings and actions. His choice of photogram is judicious: it is a readily available and easily interchangeable medium, and as such is also the reason why he sometimes creates work in the form of letters, photos and videos. These media allow him to formulate his artistic ideas quickly and to disseminate them easily. Halász and his Hungarian contemporaries want first and foremost to enter into dialogue with us, to make us think and to incite social change with their art.

FR - ‘A State Before Religion’ est une série de photogrammes d’Halász. Un photogramme est l’épreuve d’un objet placé et éclairé directement sur du matériel photosensible dans une chambre noire. Halász souhaite s’adresser à nous de manière très directe par ces contrastes vifs entre le noir et le blanc. Il crée une atmosphère mystérieuse et religieuse à l’aide d’images simples de mains, de têtes et d’oreilles notamment. Selon l’artiste, toutes les choses sont ‘égales et concrètes’ dans ‘l’état qui précède la religion’. Halász entend nous amener à réfléchir à des significations et des actions très anciennes. Le choix du photogramme est délibéré: il s’agit d’un moyen disponible et aisément négociable et c’est aussi la raison pour laquelle il s’en sert parfois sous la forme de lettres, de photos et de videos, par exemple. Ces médias lui permettent de formuler rapidement ses idées artistiques et de les diffuser facilement. Halász et ses contemporains hongrois veulent avant tout dialoguer avec nous, nous faire réfléchir et nous inviter à changer la société avec leur art.
