Atlantis

NL - De titel ‘Atlantis’ verwijst naar het gelijknamige mythische eiland dat bij de Griekse goden uit de gratie viel, door zee werd overspoeld en verdween. Over de ligging van het eiland circuleren verschillende theorieën maar omdat geen enkele afdoende is bewezen, blijft het mysterie bestaan. Reuters werk omvat een gigantische reddingsboei van het type dat door marine-archeologen wordt gebruikt om vondsten van de bodem van de oceaan naar het wateroppervlak te brengen. De boei wordt door de kunstenaar poëtisch geïnterpreteerd als een middel om het eiland Atlantis, en breder dat wat vergeten en verborgen is geraakt, terug aan het licht te brengen. De boei maakt verbinding met mythes en al dan niet waargebeurde verhalen uit heden en verleden en met wat verbeelding zouden we er onder meer ook een aangespoelde walvis in kunnen zien.

ENG - The title ‘Atlantis’ alludes to the eponymous mythical island that fell out of favour with the Greek gods, was inundated by the sea and disappeared. Theories about the location of the island abound, but as none have been conclusively proven, the mystery remains. Reuter’s work contains a gigantic lifebuoy of the kind used by marine archaeologists to raise finds from the bottom of the ocean and bring them to the surface. The buoy was poetically interpreted by the artist, as a means of shining a spotlight on the island of Atlantis again, and more broadly, on that which has been forgotten and hidden. The buoy forges a connection with myths and stories from the present and the past which may or may not be true. With a little imagination, a beached whale is just one of the things we should be able to discern.

FR - Le titre ‘Atlantis’ évoque l’île mythique du même nom, tombée en disgrâce auprès des dieux grecs, submergée par la mer et qui a disparu. Plusieurs théories circulent sur la position exacte de l’île, mais aucune d’entre elles n’ayant été prouvée de manière satisfaisante, le mystère subsiste. L’oeuvre de Reuter comporte une gigantesque bouée de sauvetage du type utilisé par les archéologues marins pour faire remonter des découvertes du fond de l’océan à la surface de l’eau. L’artiste a interprété la bouée de manière poétique comme un moyen de ramener à la lumière l’île Atlantide et, dans un sens plus large, ce qui a été oublié et dissimulé. La bouée fait le lien avec des mythes et des récits, véridiques ou non, du présent et du passé et avec un peu d’imagination, on pourrait y voir notamment une baleine échouée.
