NL – Tussen 2000 en 2004 bouwde Kusolwong zijn ‘Emotional Machine (VW with Marcel Broodthaers)’. De installatie bestaat uit een ‘landschap’ van auto-onderdelen. In het midden ervan hangt de ontmantelde carrosserie van een Volkswagen Kever, die in dit werk dienst doet als schommel. We zouden erin plaats kunnen nemen, om te genieten van idyllische stadsbeelden met een ondergaande zon. Op een speelse manier krijgt de oude Kever opnieuw betekenis als vervoermiddel, figuurlijk dan wel, als vehikel voor poëtische vervoering. Dit net zoals de handschaduwbeelden beroep doen op onze verbeelding in ‘La souris écrit rat’ (1974), een kunstwerk van de Belgische conceptuele kunstenaar Marcel Broodthaers (1924-76) dat Surasi Kusolwong in deze installatie opnam.
ENG – Between 2000 and 2004, Kusolwong built his ‘Emotional Machine (VW with Marcel Broodthaers)’. This installation consists of a ‘landscape’ of car parts. In the middle hangs the dismantled bodywork of a Volkswagen Beetle, which in this work serves as a swing. You could just get in and enjoy some idyllic views of the city in the setting sun. In a playful way, the old Beetle gains a new significance as a means of transport, though only figuratively, and as a vehicle for poetic transports. In exactly the same way as the hand silhouettes appeal to our imagination in ‘La souris écrit rat’ (1974), an artwork by the major Belgian conceptual artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) that Surasi Kusolwong has incorporated into the installation.
FR - Entre 2000 et 2004, Kusolwong a construit son ‘Emotional Machine (VW with Marcel Broodthaers)’. L’installation se compose d’un ‘paysage’ de parties de voiture. La carrosserie démantelée d’une Coccinelle est accrochée au milieu. Dans cette œuvre, elle fait office de balançoire. On pourrait y prendre place et profiter de vues idylliques de la ville sur un fond de soleil couchant. La vieille Coccinelle prend de nouveau du sens d’une manière ludique en tant que moyen de transport, au sens figuré toutefois, en tant que véhicule de transports poétiques. A l’instar des ombres de mains qui font appel à notre imagination dans ‘La souris écrit rat’ (1974), une œuvre d’art de l’important artiste conceptuel belge Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) que Surasi Kusolwong a intégrée dans cette installation.
