NL – Zoals elk werk van De Keyser is ‘Flank’ opgebouwd uit meerdere kleuren en lagen. Aan dit schilderij werkte hij twee jaar. De manier waarop het is geschilderd, vraagt ons om tijd te nemen om echt goed te kijken. De verftoetsen zien eruit als willekeurige spatten op een monochrome verflaag. Maar dat lijkt alleen maar zo: zo willekeurig zijn de spatten niet en de achtergrond bestaat niet uit één kleur maar uit verschillende kleurlagen over elkaar heen. De Keysers schilderijen verwijzen niet naar iets concreets. Ze verwijzen enkel naar zichzelf en naar hun geschilderde huid. De titel van dit schilderij, ‘Flank’, zegt niet noodzakelijk iets over de inhoud ervan. De Keyser was dan ook geen verhalend schilder. Het schilderen zelf, het aftasten van de materie, was voor hem het kernverhaal.
ENG – 'Flank' is built up of multiple colours and layers, like each piece by De Keyser. He spent two years working on this painting. The way in which it is painted urges us to take the time to really observe it. The brushstrokes look like random splashes on a monochrome layer of paint. However, this is only how it appears: the splashes are not so random and the background is not made up of a single colour, but of various layers of colour, painted one on top of another. De Keyser's paintings do not refer to anything specific. They refer only to themselves, and their painted skin. The title of this painting, 'Flank', does not necessarily say anything about its content. De Keyser was not a narrative painter. The painting itself, exploring the materials, that is what constituted the essence for him.
FR - A l’instar de toutes les oeuvres de De Keyser, ‘Flank’ a été construit en plusieurs couleurs et couches. Il travailla deux ans à cette peinture. La manière dont elle est peinte nous invite à prendre le temps de bien la regarder. Les touches de peinture ressemblent à des éclaboussures arbitraires sur une couche monochrome. Mais ce n’est qu’une apparence: ces éclaboussures ne sont pas tellement arbitraires et l’arrière-fond ne se compose pas d’une seule couleur, mais de différentes couches superposées. Les peintures de De Keyser n’évoquent rien de concret. Elles ne renvoient qu’à elles-mêmes et à leur peau peinte. Le titre de cette peinture, ‘Flank’, n’évoque pas nécessairement son contenu. De Keyser n’était pas un peintre conteur. L’essentiel pour lui était de peindre, de tâter la matière.
