NL - De tekeningenreeks ‘Recession (sell it separately, not as series)’ maakte Solakov in 2008, het jaar waarin de economische crisis uitbrak. Stilistisch zijn de tekeningen schatplichtig aan het (komische) beeldverhaal, de voorloper van het stripverhaal, waarbij de tekst niet in tekstballonnen maar onder of boven de tekeningen werd geschreven. Elke tekening vormt een op zichzelf staand kortverhaal, waarin Solakov, telkens in zijn bekende absurdistische stijl en met veel zin voor surreële verbeelding, vertelt over een (economische) crisissituatie. Hoewel volkomen fictief, zorgen de relatieve eenvoud, esthetiek, humor en aanstekelijke vertelstijl van de tekeningen ervoor dat deze vijftien ‘mini-economische crisissen’ bijna realistisch tastbaar worden. Het bijschrift uit de titel ‘(sell it separately, not as a series)’ is een ironische verwijzing naar de kunstmarkt. In tijden van crisis kunnen ook verzamelaars zich misschien maar één tekening veroorloven in plaats van de volledige reeks.

ENG - Solakov made the drawing series ‘Recession (sell it separately, not as series)’ in 2008, the year in which the economic crisis erupted. Stylistically, the drawings are indebted to the (comic) illustrated story, the precursor to the comic strip, in which the text was not set in balloons but either beneath or above the drawings. Each drawing is a stand-alone short story, in which Solakov, always in his familiar absurdist style and with a dash of surreal fantasy, describes an (economic) crisis situation. Despite being entirely fictional, the relative simplicity, aesthetics, humour and appealing narrative style of the drawings ensure that the fifteen ‘mini economic crises’ become almost realistically tangible. The subtitle ‘(sell it separately, not as a series)’ is an ironic allusion to the art market. In times of crisis, collectors might only be able to afford to buy a single drawing instead of a whole series.

Sur le plan stylistique, les dessins sont tributaires de l’histoire (comique) en images, le prédécesseur de la bande dessinée, où le texte n’était pas écrit dans des phylactères, mais en-dessous ou au-dessus des dessins. Chaque dessin constitue en soi une histoire brève isolée, dans laquelle Solakov parle d’une situation de crise (économique), chaque fois dans son célèbre style absurde et avec un sens très poussé pour l’imagination surréelle. Bien qu’ils soient totalement fictifs, la simplicité relative, l’esthétique, l’humour et le style narratif contagieux des dessins ont pour effet de rendre ces quinze ‘mini-crises économiques’ presque réellement tangibles. Le commentaire dans le titre ‘(sell it separately, not as a series)’ est une référence ironique au marché de l’art. En périodes de crise, les collectionneurs ne peuvent peut-être se permettre qu’un seul dessin et non la série complète.
