Regenfrau / I Am Called A Plant

NL - Het geluid in ‘Regenfrau / I Am Called A Plant’ doet denken aan regendruppels of een lekkende kraan. Het begeleidt een videoprojectie op een hoge, witte keukenwand, waarin het naakte lichaam van een vrouw in een natgeregende grasberm ligt. Het enige wat ze draagt is een felroze pruik. Als een onzichtbare hand glijdt de camera over haar hele lichaam, daarbij wisselend tussen close-ups en overzichtsbeelden. Het bewegingsloze lichaam in combinatie met de ondertitel ‘I Am Called A Plant’ wijst op het idee van de vrouw als (passief) ‘object’. De vrouw met het (Barbie)roze haar, de keuken, haar naakte lichaam dat zowel naar lust als naar dood verwijst en de kille vochtige omgeving roepen, ondanks de klassieke esthetiek waarmee de kunstenaar ze behandelde, een verlaten en onderdrukte sfeer op. Het feministische karakter, dat in veel andere werken van Rist explicieter is, lijkt hier langs een achterpoortje binnen te sluipen.

ENG - The sound in ‘Regenfrau / I Am Called A Plant’ is reminiscent of raindrops or a dripping tap. It accompanies a video projected onto a high, white kitchen wall, in which the naked body of a woman lies in a grass verge soaked by rain. All she is wearing is a vivid pink wig. The camera glides over her whole body like an invisible hand, alternating between close-ups and general views. In combination with the subtitle ‘I Am Called A Plant’, the motionless body hints at the notion of the woman as a passive ‘object’. Despite the traditionally aesthetic way the artist treats her, the woman with her Barbie-like pink hair, the kitchen, her naked body, which refers to both desire and death, and the bleak, damp surroundings together summon up a desolate and oppressive atmosphere. The feminist element, which is more explicit in many of Rist’s other works, here seems to be creeping in through the back door.

FR - Le son dans ‘Regenfrau / I Am Called A Plant’ fait penser à des gouttes de pluie ou à un robinet qui fuit. Il accompagne une projection vidéo sur un haut mur de cuisine blanc, dans laquelle le corps nu d'une femme repose sur un gazon humide après la pluie. La seule chose qu'elle porte est une perruque rose vif. Comme une main invisible, la caméra glisse sur tout son corps, alternant entre des gros plans et des vues d'ensemble. Le corps immobile en combinaison avec le sous-titre ‘I Am Called A Plant’ avance l'idée de la femme en tant qu’« objet » (passif). La femme aux cheveux roses (Barbie), la cuisine, son corps nu évoquant à la fois le désir et la mort et les ambiances froides et humides évoquent, malgré l'esthétique classique dont use l’artiste pour les traiter, une atmosphère déserte et oppressée. Le caractère féministe, qui est moins explicite dans beaucoup d'autres œuvres de Rist, semble se glisser ici par une porte dérobée.
