NL – Voor deze digitale videoprojectie kleurde Welling zwart-witte filmbeelden digitaal in die zijn grootvader William C. Welling in de jaren ’30 had gemaakt. De zondagsschilder filmde deze beelden van de Atlantische Oceaan ter inspiratie voor zijn schilderijen. James Wellings broer componeerde de soundtrack. In ‘Seascape’ zien we een kleinzoon als het ware door de ogen van zijn grootvader kijken, maar dan in kleur. De video bevraagt de betekenis van auteurschap en familie, en verbindt onze digitale tijd met het analoge tijdperk van fotografie en film.
ENG – For his digital video projection 'Seascape', Welling digitally coloured black-and-white film footage produced by his grandfather, William C. Welling. The Sunday painter filmed these images of the Atlantic in the 1930s as inspiration for his paintings. James Welling’s brother composed the soundtrack. In ‘Seascape’ we witness a grandson looking through the eyes of his grandfather, as it were, but in colour. The video questions the meaning of authorship and family, and connects our digital age with the analogue era of photography and film.
FR - Pour sa projection vidéo digitale ‘Seascape’, Welling coloria de manière digitale des images cinématographiques en noir et blanc de son grand-père, William C. Welling. Ce peintre du dimanche filmait ces images de l’Océan Atlantique dans les années ’30 et servaient d’inspiration à ses tableaux. Le frère de James Welling composa la bande sonore. Dans ‘Seascape’, nous voyons un petit-fils qui regarde d’une certaine façon à travers les yeux de son grand-père, mais en couleurs. Le vidéo s’interroge sur le sens du statut d’auteur et de la famille, et il relie notre époque digitale à l’époque analogique de la photographie et du cinéma.
