Suspended chair

NL - De hangende stoel, met kabels bevestigd aan de wanden van de tentoonstellingsruimte, komt vanaf de jaren ‘80 geregeld in verschillende gedaantes in Naumans oeuvre terug. Deze tekening diende als ontwerpschets voor de installatie met dezelfde titel uit 1987: een stalen stoel die aan stalen kabels is opgehangen. Het lege zitmeubel is een kunsthistorisch motief, dat onder meer ook bij Van Gogh en Warhol voorkomt. Het roept in de eerste plaats het afwezige mensenlichaam op. Maar doordat de stoel hier ondersteboven en dus onbruikbaar in de ruimte is opgehangen, roept hij een onbehaaglijk gevoel op. Voor Nauman is de stoel een metafoor. Het meubel is een aanklacht tegen de aanhoudende politieke mistoestanden en gewelddadige schendingen van de mensenrechten die zich voordeden in de periode dat hij deze werken maakte.

ENG - The suspended chair, attached by cables to the walls of the exhibition space, appears regularly in various guises in Nauman’s oeuvre from the 1980s onwards. This drawing served as a design sketch for the 1987 installation of the same name: a steel chair suspended by steel cables. The empty chair is an art historical motif that also occurs in the work of Van Gogh and Warhol, amongst others. In the first place, it evokes the absent human body. But because the chair is hung upside down in the room, and is therefore unusable, it evokes an uneasy feeling. For Nauman, the chair is a metaphor. It is an indictment on the persistent political abuses and brutal violations of human rights that characterised the period in which he made these works.

FR - À partir des années 1980, le fauteuil suspendu, fixé par des câbles aux murs de l'espace d'exposition, apparaît régulièrement sous différentes formes dans l'œuvre de Nauman. Ce dessin servit d'esquisse pour l'installation de 1987 du même nom: une chaise en acier suspendue par des câbles d'acier. La chaise vide est un motif d’histoire de l’art qui apparaît également chez Van Gogh et Warhol, entres autres. En premier lieu, elle évoque le corps humain absent. Mais étant donné que la chaise est suspendue à l'envers dans la pièce, de sorte qu'elle ne peut pas être utilisée, elle suscite en nous un sentiment désagréable. Pour Nauman, la chaise est une métaphore. Ce meuble est une mise en accusation contre les abus politiques persistants et les violations violentes des droits de l'homme qui eurent lieu pendant la période de créations de ces œuvres.
