NL - Eén blik op dit titelloze werk en we herkennen Pinokkio. Het woord ‘pinocchio’ is Italiaans voor een stukje pijnboom en verwijst naar de neus van de jongen die almaar langer wordt wanneer hij liegt. ‘Suspension of disbelief’ maakt dat mensen slecht zijn in het herkennen van leugens, maar in het geval van Pinokkio wordt de leugen zichtbaar. Het is dan ook bewust dat de neus vooraan open is, zodat we kunnen binnenkijken in het beeld. In het sprookje beleeft de jongen allerlei avonturen maar eigenlijk is hij een object, een creatie van timmerman Geppetto. Voor Shachar staat Pinokkio symbool voor het kunstwerk en Geppetto voor de kunstenaar. In het verhaal krijgt Pinokkio op zijn eerste schooldag een appel mee. De appel op Pinokkio’s neus verwijst ook naar een ander bekend verhaal: de legende van Wilhelm Tell die met een kruisboog de appel van het hoofd van zijn zoon moest schieten. De vader-zoon relatie staat in beide verhalen centraal.

ENG - A single glance at this untitled work is all it takes for us to recognise Pinocchio. In Italian, the word ‘pinocchio’ means a piece of pine tree; but it also alludes to the boy whose nose grows longer when he tells lies. ‘Suspension of disbelief’ means that people are bad at recognising falsehoods, but in the case of Pinocchio, the lie becomes visible. It is thus also deliberate that the nose is open at the front, so that we can look inside the sculpture. In the fairy tale, the boy experiences all kinds of adventures. In reality, however, he is an object – a creation of the carpenter Geppetto. For Shachar, Pinocchio symbolises the artwork and Geppetto the artist. In the story, Pinocchio is given an apple to take with him on his first day at school. The apple on Pinocchio’s nose also alludes to another familiar story: the legend of William Tell, who had to shoot the apple from his son’s head. In both stories, the father-son relationship plays a central role.

FR - Un seul regard sur cette oeuvre sans titre suffit pour que nous reconnaissions Pinocchio. Le terme ‘pinocchio’ est un morceau de pin en italien et il fait référence au nez du garçon qui ne fait que s’allonger quand il ment. ‘Suspension of disbelief’ fait que les gens ne sont pas forts pour reconnaître des mensonges, mais dans le cas de Pinocchio, le mensonge est visible. C’est donc intentionnel que le nez soit ouvert à l’avant, ce qui nous permet de regarder à l’intérieur de l’image. Dans le conte, le garçon vit toutes sortes d’aventures, mais en réalité, il est un objet, une création du menuisier Gepetto. Pour Shachar, Pinocchio symbolise l’oeuvre d’art et Gepetto l’artiste. Dans l’histoire, Pinocchio reçoit une pomme lors de son premier jour d’école. La pomme sur le nez de Pinocchio renvoie aussi à une autre histoire connue: la légende de Guillaume Tell qui doit viser avec un arc la pomme sur la tête de son fils. La relation père-fils occupe une position centrale dans les deux histoires.
