COVER H Visch Cosmic Dance

On Sunday 15 November, S.M.A.K. and Posture Editions cordially invite you to the book launch and artist talk celebrating the release of the new book 'Henk Visch—Cosmic Dance' by Barbara De Coninck, which spans the rich practice of Dutch artist Henk Visch. The book delves deeply into an oeuvre whose roots lie in the art of the 1980s.

In September 2026, Posture Editions released a book that spans the rich body of work by the Dutch artist Henk Visch. The book delves deeply into an oeuvre whose roots lie in the art of the 1980s.

The book ‘Henk Visch—Cosmic Dance’ is a transcript of the answers to the many questions Barbara De Coninck put to Henk Visch in his studio in Eindhoven. The artist himself speaks, recounting his early years, his first exhibitions, commissions in public spaces and his journey through the art world. We learn about his ideas, his outlook on life as an artist, where his inspiration comes from and how he, in turn, inspires others.

This surprising text is illustrated with unique images of very early works and of the many international exhibitions, including those at Het Gewad in Ghent in 1985, at P.S. 1 in New York in 1992 and Visch’s contribution to the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1988. Works by, amongst others, Jimmie Durham, René Magritte, Guillaume Bijl and Agnès Varda have also been included to illustrate the text.

Following Henk Visch’s many stories and imaginative reflections is an extensive visual section featuring sculptures and drawings, selected and curated by Posture Editions. The relevance and consistency of Henk Visch’s body of work, which now stretches back over half a century, are evident here.

‘Henk Visch—Cosmic Dance’ concludes with a wide selection of photographs from the solo exhibition ‘Ik was getrouwd met een aap’ [I Was Married to a Monkey], at Be-Part Kortrijk (12 September–29 November 2026), photographed by Dirk Pauwels.

The book was realized with the support of the Mondriaan Fund, the Jaap Harten Fund, and Be-Part, Platform for Contemporary Art.

Biographies

Henk Visch (b.1950, Eindhoven - lives and works in Eindhoven, Netherlands, en Berlin, Germany)

Henk Visch is one of the most distinctive artists of his generation. Since the late 1970s, he has built up a rich and multifaceted body of work encompassing sculpture, drawing, printmaking, installations and texts.

Central to his practice is the human figure, not as a realistic representation, but as a vehicle for thoughts, memories, desires and doubts. His sculptures strike a balance between strength and vulnerability, presence and absence. They appear to be in a state of constant transformation and invite the viewer to reflect rather than to arrive at a single, unambiguous interpretation.

Throughout his long career, Henk Visch has held numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad and created an impressive number of monumental works in public spaces. He represented the Netherlands at the 1988 Venice Biennale and took part in Documenta IX. His work is included in leading museum collections such as the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller, De Pont Museum in Tilburg, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, the Middelheim Museum and M HKA in Antwerp. He also gained great renown as a teacher and source of inspiration, encouraging generations of artists in the Netherlands and Germany to place imagination, freedom and experimentation at the heart of their practice.

Sharon Van Overmeiren (°1985, Antwerp - lives & works in Antwerp)

The work of Sharon Van Overmeiren reflects on the images with which we surround ourselves. She thinks about how a specific image or a complete visual language is created, how the forms become bearers of meaning, and how this meaning changes – through time or through different cultures.

In concrete terms, this means that she creates new, composite images that are made up of a multitude of references. Van Overmeiren’s sources and references are extremely broad and cover both high and low culture: from cartoons to pre-Columbian motifs, from museum scenography to Pokémon. The images Van Overmeiren creates are literally layered, and the relationship between all the different layers of images constantly evokes new meanings.

Sharon Van Overmeiren resided as an artist in Jan Van Eyck, Maastricht and Wiels, Brussels. She has shown her work at solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, including Royal Museum of Fine Arts KMSKA, Antwerp; Rodolphe Janssen Gallery, Brussels; Lucie Drdova Gallery, Prague; Neuer Aachen Kunstverein, Aachen; De Warande, Turnhout; HORST festival, Vilvoorde; Keramiekmuseum Princesshof, Leeuwarden; Garage, Rotterdam; Stigter Van Doesburg, Amsterdam; Extra City, Antwerp: Damien & the Love Guru, Brussels; Kunsthal KadE, Amersfoort; M UHKA, Antwerp; and Wiels, Brussels.
