The Friends will travel to Georgia in the autumn, following europalia, which the arts festival is dedicating to Georgia this year.
Every two years, europalia brings a multifaceted artistic programme around a country or a theme. For four months, in Belgium and the surrounding area, europalia and its rich network of cultural partners present a biennial with dozens of artistic and sociocultural projects that bring together visual arts, theatre, dance, performance, film, music, literature and debate and stimulate the exchange of ideas. New creations and artist residencies take centre stage in a programme with a unique interaction between heritage and art. The various exhibitions and events each bring together famous or slightly unknown works of art and artists from original perspectives in a festival that combines tradition and artistic experimentation. europalia aims to promote intercultural and intergenerational exchanges, as well as stimulate research, reflection and creation. This edition starts from the fascinating Georgian culture and artistic scenes of both the vibrant capital Tbilisi and those of lesser-known cities and regions. From 4 October 2023, a rich programme of exhibitions, performances, concerts, film, dance and theatre performances and literature will start all over Belgium.

As part of europalia georgia, S.M.A.K. is organising the first museum solo exhibition of Georgian artist Karlo Kacharava (1964 - 1994) outside Georgia.
With this exhibition, we open Kacharava's "inventive visual world" to a much wider audience. As part of an audience programme, S.M.A.K. will also invite a younger generation of (diasporic Georgian) artists to dialogue with his work.
As usual, besides Karlo Kacharava's flat and archive, the Friends will also visit several artists in their studios. As well as numerous art spaces and galleries.
