Guided tour at Mu.zee

Mu.ZEE invited US guest curators Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath to view the work of Belgian artist Raoul De Keyser through the lens of a number of historical and contemporary artists from around the world.

Friends in a Field: Conversations with Raoul De Keyser takes the artist's radical language of lightness, playfulness and beauty as the starting point for a conversation with a diverse group of artists who, in different ways, share a similar openness in their work. These connections flow mainly from a shared sensitivity and attention to the fragile elusiveness of the world.

The artists in this exhibition are: Richard Aldrich (b. 1975), Forrest Bess (1911-1977), Matt Connors (b. 1973), René Daniëls (b. 1950), Raoul De Keyser (1930-2012), Vincent Fecteau (b. 1969), Maysha Mohamedi (b. 1980), Rebecca Morris (b. 1969), Betty Parsons (1900-1982), Amy Sillman (b. 1955), Ricky Swallow (b. 1974), Patricia Treib (b. 1979), Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) and Lesley Vance (b. 1977 )

Visit to the studio of Bert Huyghe.

  • Bert Huyghe was born in Eeklo in 1989 and grew up there without any hi-brow artistic influences. So when he first saw an abstract painting hanging in a museum, his immediate reference was that of ... football. A black and white striped painting by Daniel Buren? That's a Juventus jersey. In his layered and colourful canvases, Huyghe juxtaposes this childlike way of looking at art with large and stately painterly choices. In this way, Huyghe explores what painting can mean today, both in terms of content and feeling. He does so with an apparent playfulness and an often hilarious capacity for self-deprecation. Despite his youth, Bert Huyghe has been a driving force within the artistic underground scene for years with numerous DIY releases, musical projects and performances, and his work has already been exhibited in Belgian museums such as SMAK and Mu.Zee.
