Hettie Judah shares her research on art and parenthood, and suggests changes we might make in working toward a more inclusive art world.

This talk will cover topics raised in her recent book – How Not to Exclude Artist Mothers (and other parents) – focussing in particular on the role of institutions, musea, residencies, galleries and art schools, and will conclude with a discussion of the issues parents face returning to the art world after taking time out to raise a family.

Each academic year, Curatorial Studies at KASK & Conservatorium School of Arts, S.M.A.K. and Ghent University co-organise the Curatorial Lectures series, inviting curators to share certain aspects of their practice.

On Thursday 16 February at 8 pm, we have the honour to welcome Luca Lo Pinto (1981), the artistic director of MACRO - Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome in S.M.A.K.

From 2014 to 2019 he worked as curator of Kunsthalle Wien. He is co-founder of the magazine and publishing house NERO. He produced a range of solo exhibitions, publications, essays and had several curatorial projects. In 2012 he edited the book Documenta 1955-2012. The endless story of two lovers.

Following the publication of the monograph The End Is Never Near, Melanie Deboutte talks to Jan Van Imschoot. As from 7 October 2023, S.M.A.K. will present an exhibition by this artist.

The End Is Never Near presents the first comprehensive survey of the oeuvre of Belgian painter Jan Van Imschoot (b. 1963, Ghent, Belgium). His work is built around historical themes from literature and art history, bridging to predecessors such as Caravaggio, More than 200 works by Jan Van Imschoot are included in this monograph, which contains in-depth essays by Selen Ansen, Dieter Roelstraete, Alain Tapié and Philippe Van Cauteren, as well as an extensive conversation between the artist and Hendrik Folkerts.
