This may be a fictitious tale, but it does provide him with the perfect hook for reflecting upon his social role as an artist and the fine line between reality and illusion. With its allusions to various iconographic traditions, such as the painting of the Old Masters and the classic Hollywood film, the triptych illustrates why Rinus Van de Velde has in recent years established himself as one of the most important draughtsmen of his generation: it demonstrates his ability to create a scene entirely from charcoal which immediately attracts and fascinates due to its visual impact.
