Hand-painted cloth used to cleaning window

NL – Lee Kit gebruikt zijn schilderijen letterlijk bij dagelijkse handelingen. In zachte pasteltinten schildert hij gestreepte patronen op stukken textiel, die daarna dienstdoen als bv. picknicklaken, tafelkleed of gordijn. De foto naast het doek in ‘Hand-painted cloth used to cleaning window’ ‘bewijst’ dat met deze handgeschilderde vod effectief ramen zijn gelapt. Meer dan een schilderij is dit doek een ‘relict’ of overblijfsel van een handeling: de vuile vlekken getuigen van een aanraking met het ‘echte’ leven. De vod is een soort ‘uitgestelde readymade’: het doek was eerst schilderij – en dus al een kunstwerk –, werd daarna gebruiksvoorwerp, en pas daarna in een museale context verheven tot ‘readymade’, of ‘gevonden (alledaags) voorwerp dat door de kunstenaar tot kunst werd bestempeld’.

ENG – Lee Kit uses his paintings literally for daily tasks. In soft pastel tones he paints striped patterns on pieces of textile, which then serve as a picnic blanket, tablecloth or curtain. The photo alongside the painting in ‘Hand-painted cloth used to cleaning window’ ‘proves’ that this hand-painted piece of cloth has in fact been used to clean windows. More than a painting, this cloth is a ‘relic’ or remnant of an action: the dirty marks are proof of contact with ‘real’ life. The cloth is a ‘delayed ready-made’: the cloth was initially a painting – and thus a work of art – afterwards it waxed into a domestic accessory and subsequently - a museological context - elevated to a ‘ready-made’ or ‘ found (everyday) item that is classified by the artist as art’.

FR - Lee Kit se sert littéralement de ses peintures dans les actions quotidiennes. Il peint, dans des tons pastel doux, des motifs rayés sur des morceaux de textile, qui servent ensuite de couverture pour pique-niques, de nappe ou de rideau, par exemple. La photo à côté de la toile dans ‘Hand painted cloth used to cleaning window’ ‘prouve’ que ce chiffon peint à la main sert effectivement à nettoyer les carreaux. Plus qu’une peinture, cette toile est le ‘reste’ ou le vestige d’une action: les sales taches témoignent d’un contact avec la ‘vraie’ vie. Le chiffon est une sorte de ‘readymade différé’: la toile était d’abord une peinture – et donc déjà un chef d’oeuvre -, ensuite elle est devenue un objet d’usage courant et c’est qu’après qu’elle est élevée au niveau d’un ‘readymade’ dans un contexte muséal, ou d’un ‘objet (d’usage courant) trouvé que l’artiste a qualifié d’art’.
