Nuages en pantalons

NL - ‘Nuages en pantalons’ is één van Alechinsky’s weinige schilderijen in olieverf. Sinds 1955 werkte hij onder invloed van de Oosterse kalligrafie vooral met snellere materialen zoals Oost-Indische inkt of acrylverf. Dit liet hem toe om intuïtiever en spontaner te werken. De kalligrafie scherpte ook zijn interesse voor schrift aan. In ‘Nuages en pantalons’ komen deze twee aspecten samen. De titel is ontleend aan een gedicht van de rus Vladimir Majakovski over een onbeantwoorde liefde en over de maatschappijkritische positie van kunstenaars. Alechinsky vatte dit schilderij op als een schriftuur die hij intuïtief, in een dansante beweging creëerde. Hij greep ermee terug naar de ‘écriture automatique’, een techniek uit het surrealisme die gericht was op schrijven zonder vooropgezet idee. ‘Nuages en pantalons’ blijft vooral abstract, hoewel er ook mensachtige figuren in opduiken, en vormt de basis voor Alechinsky’s latere beeldtaal, die bleef uitgaan van schriftuur maar meer uitgesproken figuratief was.

ENG - ‘Nuages en pantalons’ is one of Alechinsky’s few paintings in oils. After 1955 his work was influenced by oriental calligraphy, especially using such faster materials as Indian ink and acrylic paint. This enabled him to work more spontaneously and intuitively. Calligraphy also heightened his interest in writing. These two elements come together in ‘Nuages en pantalons’. The title is taken from a poem by the Russian Vladimir Mayakovski about an unrequited love and the social position of artists. Alechinsky interpreted this painting in the form of a piece of writing that he created intuitively in a dance-like movement. In this way he returned to ‘écriture automatique’, a technique used by the surrealists that was intended for writing without any preconceived idea. ‘Nuages en pantalons’ remains primarily abstract, although human-like figures do make an appearance, and it established the basis for Alechinsky’s later visual idiom, which continued to be founded on writing, but was more explicitly figurative.
