Sans titre

NL – Vanaf midden jaren ‘50 tot begin jaren ‘60 creëerde Michaux onder invloed van lsd en mescaline zijn meest bekende werken. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid ontstond ook ‘Sans titre’ onder invloed van geestverruimende middelen. Volgens de kunstenaar probeerde hij met deze werkmethode het niet-statische in zichzelf te bevrijden en ruimte te maken voor ‘a suddenly new and living movement’. Net zoals bij vele tekeningen die hij eerder en later heeft gemaakt, verwijzen de zwarte lijnen – zonder daarbij enige vorm van taal of betekenis mee te willen geven – naar het sierlijke oosterse kalligrafische schrift dat Michaux zich eigen had gemaakt.

ENG – From the mid-1950s until the early 1960s, Michaux executed his most famous works under the influence of LSD and mescaline. In all probability, ‘Sans titre’ was also created under the influence of mind-altering substances. According to the artist, he took this approach in an attempt to liberate the non-static within himself and make room for ‘a suddenly new and living movement’. As with many of the drawings he made, both early and late, the black lines – which he never wanted to imbue with any form of language or meaning – refer to the graceful oriental calligraphic script that Michaux had made his own.

FR - A partir du milieu des années ’50 jusqu’au début des années ’60, Michaux créa ses oeuvres les plus connues sous l’emprise du lsd et de la mescaline. Selon toute vraisemblance, ‘Sans titre’ vit également le jour sous l’influence de produits hallucinogènes. Par cette méthode, l’artiste tentait de libérer le non-statique en lui et de créer de l’espace pour ‘a suddenly new and living movement’. A l’instar de nombreux dessins qu’il avait réalisés plus tôt et plus tard, les lignes noires évoquent – sans préciser pour autant la moindre forme de langage ou de signification – l’écriture calligraphique orientale élégante que Michaux s’était appropriée.
