NL - Abstract of niet? Het is niet al te moeilijk om in dit grote schilderij een zeezicht met een hoge horizonlijn te herkennen. Zwarte wolken hangen in een lucht van bizar bleekgroen. De rode strook onderaan lijkt wel een bloedheet strand waarop een zonnematje en een handdoek liggen. Een strook, een rechthoek en een vierkant. Geometrische vormen. Afgelijnde kleurvlakken, vaak met grillige contouren, schuiven bijna als een collage in elkaar. Ze doen denken aan de Amerikaanse 'colorfield'-schilderkunst en het abstract-expressionisme van onder meer Robert Motherwell en Clyfford Still. Harold Ancart nam in dit werk het landschap en het strand- en zeegezicht – traditionele schilderkunstgenres – onder handen. Het schilderij lijkt wel een snapshot, gemaakt tijdens een roadtrip langs een kust, waarvan de kunstenaar zich details herinnert zoals bv. een plant of een zeilboot. Markante kleuren, giftige tinten en gitzwart creëren een bevreemdende sfeer. Wat op het eerste zicht misschien een droomplek lijkt, blijkt onderhuids behoorlijk onheilspellend te zijn.

ENG - Abstract or not? It is not too difficult in this large painting to recognize a sea view with its high horizon. Dark clouds of a bizarre pale green hang in the air. The red strip at the bottom looks like a scorching hot beach where a sun mat and a towel are lying. A strip, a rectangle and a square. Geometric shapes. Finely defined areas of colour, often with irregular contours, slot together in a way that resembles a collage. They are reminiscent of the American 'colourfield' style of painting and the abstract expressionism of, among others, Robert Motherwell and Clyfford Still. In this work Harold Ancart approached the landscape, beach and seascape applying traditional painting genres. The painting looks like a snapshot, taken during a road trip along a coast, from which the artist recalls details such as a plant or a sailboat. Distinctive colours, discordant hues and jet-black create an alienating atmosphere. What might seem like a dream spot at first sight, appears to be rather ominous as we dig a little deeper.

FR - Abstrait ou non? Il est relativement aisé de reconnaître sur ce grand tableau une vue de la mer avec une ligne d’horizon élevée. Des nuages noirs meublent un ciel d’un vert pâle étrange. La bande rouge dans la partie inférieure semble être une plage brûlante sur laquelle sont posées une natte et une serviette. Une bande, un rectangle et un carré. Des formes géométriques. Des surfaces colorées bien délimitées, aux contours souvent biscornus, s’imbriquent l’une dans l’autre comme un collage. Elles évoquent la peinture américaine ‘colorfield’ et l’expressionnisme abstrait, notamment celui de Robert Motherwell et Clyfford Still. Dans cette oeuvre, Hancart s’est intéressé au paysage et aux vues de la plage et de la mer – genres picturaux traditionnels. La peinture semble un instantané, réalisé pendant un ‘roadtrip’ le long d’une côte, dont l’artiste a gardé quelques détails en mémoire, comme une plante ou un bateau à voile. Des couleurs fortes, des teintes toxiques et noires comme du jais créent une atmosphère étrange. Ce qui semble à première vue peut-être un lieu paradisiaque paraît imperceptiblement bien lugubre.
