Zelfportret (Hippie Elias)

NL - Elias vond aansluiting bij de hippiecultuur van de jaren 1970 en hier portretteerde hij zich als hippie. Met lange haren en een bloem achter de haarband, een regenboogtrui, een ketting met vredesteken en een sigaret losjes tussen zijn lippen. Het kleurgebruik en onderwerp zijn eigentijds. Het busteportret, driekwart gedraaid, met beboste achtergrond en wolkenlucht roept echter de herinnering op aan portretten van Vlaamse en Italiaanse kunstenaars zoals Memling of Botticelli. Ook Elias’ ambachtelijke manier van schilderen in meerdere verflagen en het kleine formaat van het doek verwijzen naar het eeuwenoude portretgenre en oude meesters voor wie Elias een groot respect had.

ENG - Elias connected with the hippie culture of the 1970s. In this work, he portrayed himself as a hippie, with long hair and a flower tucked in his headband, a rainbow jumper, a necklace with a peace sign and a cigarette loosely dangling between his lips. The use of colour and subject matter are quite contemporary. The three-quarter bust portrait with its wooded background and cloudy sky, however, recalls portraits by Flemish and Italian artists such as Memling or Botticelli. Elias' traditional layered painting technique and the small size of the canvas also refer to the age-old portrait genre and the old masters whom Elias greatly respected.

FR - Elias a adhéré à la culture hippie des années 70 et s’est portraituré en tant que tel : avec des cheveux longs retenus par un bandeau dans lequel est glissée une fleur, un pull arc-en-ciel, une chaîne avec un pendentif du symbole de la paix et une cigarette aux lèvres. Le coloris et le sujet sont contemporains. Le portrait en buste, tourné de trois quarts, avec un arrière-plan boisé et un ciel nuageux, rappelle cependant les portraits d’artistes flamands et italiens, tels que Memling ou Botticelli. La manière artisanale dont Elias peignait – en plusieurs couches – et le petit format du tableau font également référence au genre séculaire du portrait et aux maîtres anciens auxquels Elias vouait un grand respect.
