With over 170 works, the exhibition 'Alien Brazil/Native Brazil' offers a unique and comprehensive overview of the oeuvre of Anna Bella Geiger. On 17 October 2021, the Brazilian artist, who is also a dedicated pedagogue, will talk to curator Tanja Boon.
Since the 1960s, Anna Bella Geiger has been investigating the representation and interpretation of physical space through the historical project of cartography. Through a variety of visual strategies, she links image, territory and power as a critique of the socio-political context in Brazil. Today, her consistent questioning of national identity, dominant structures, art systems and pedagogy continues to resonate in artistic debates about the legacy of Western modernity.
Throughout her long career, Geiger has combined her artistic practice with pedagogical activities and taught at several institutions in Rio de Janeiro. As in her art, she tries to preserve space for experimentation.
