Esprit Critique

NL - Esprit Critique uit 1970 is een laat en vrij atypisch werk van Evelyne Axell. Het werk, in carrosserie-emaille op plexiglas, aluminium en hout, verenigt een aantal van Axells vaak voorkomende motieven voor het eerst in één enkel schilderij. De man in het midden is Karel Geirlandt, stichter van de Vereniging voor het Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, het latere S.M.A.K. Hij was in die tijd een bekende kunstcriticus en vriend van de kunstenares. Onderaan staan twee vrouwenbustes. Ze lijken met elkaar te discussiëren. Axell schilderde het werk in koele groen- en blauwtinten. In de late jaren ’60 portretteerde de kunstenares wel vaker bekende kunstcritici als Pierre Restany en Jean Dypréau. Meestal in combinatie met meer sociaal-maatschappelijke thema’s en beelden, dikwijls met een ironiserende ondertoon, zoals ook hier het geval is.

ENG - Esprit Critique (Critical Mind) from 1970 is a late and rather atypical work of Evelyne Axell. The work, coachwork enamel on plexiglass, aluminium and wood, brings together a number of Axell's frequently recurring motifs in a single painting for the first time. The man in the centre of the work is Karel Geirlandt, founder of the Society for the Ghent Museum of Contemorary Art, the later S.M.A.K. At the time, he was a well-known art critic and friend of the artist. At the bottom, we can see two female heads, which seem to be arguing with each other. Axell painted the work in cool shades of green and blue. In the late 1960s, the artist would regularly portray well-known art critics such as Pierre Restany and Jean Dypréau, usually in combination with more social themes and images, often with an ironic undertone, as is also the case here.

FR - Esprit critique de 1970 est un tableau tardif et plutôt atypique de l’œuvre d’Evelyne Axell. Cette émail pour carrosserie sur plexiglas, aluminium et bois réunit pour la première fois un certain nombre de motifs récurrents d’Axell dans une même œuvre. L’homme au milieu est Karel Geirlandt, fondateur de l’Association du Musée d’Art contemporain, qui deviendra le S.M.A.K. plus tard. Geirlandt, un critique d’art réputé à l’époque, était un ami de l’artiste. Au bas du tableau, on aperçoit deux bustes de femmes qui paraissent discuter entre elles. Axell a peint l’œuvre dans des verts et des bleus plutôt froids. À la fin des années 60, l’artiste a plusieurs fois peint le portrait de critiques d’art connus, tels que Pierre Restany et Jean Dypréau, souvent en combinaison avec des thèmes et des images d’ordre plus social et sociétal et fréquemment avec une pointe d’ironie, comme c'est également le cas ici.
