Esprit Critique

NL – Centrale figuur op dit late werk van Axell is Karel Geirlandt, stichter van de Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (de huidige Vrienden v/h S.M.A.K.). Geirlandt was een bekend kunstcriticus en een goede vriend van de kunstenares. De titel ‘Esprit critique’ lijkt vooral te verwijzen naar de kritische geest van Geirlandt, waarvoor Axell een diepe bewondering koesterde. Op de voorgrond zien we twee vrouwen in gesprek met elkaar. Vrouwen zijn een motief in het werk van Axell. Meestal schilderde ze vrijgevochten naakte vrouwen, in levendige kleuren, zinderend sensueel. ‘Esprit critique’ is in deze een atypisch werk: een eerder klassiek portret, waarin vrouwen en hun seksualiteit niet centraal staan. Ook de koele groene en blauwe tinten wijken af van haar gebruikelijke felle, ‘poppy’ kleuren.

ENG – A central figure in this late work by Axell is Karel Geirlandt, founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art Association (the present-day Friends of the S.M.A.K.). Geirlandt was a well-known art critic and a good friend of the artist. The title ‘Esprit critique’ seems predominately to allude to Geirlandt’s critical spirit, of which Axell was profoundly in awe. In the foreground, we see two women in conversation. Women are a motif in Axell’s work. She mostly painted emancipated naked women, thrillingly sensual, in lively colours. In this sense, ‘Esprit critique’ is an atypical work: a rather classical portrait in which women and their sexuality do not play a central role. The cool green and blue shades are also a departure from her usual bright, ‘poppy’ colours.

FR – La figure centrale de cette œuvre tardive d'Axell est Karel Geirlandt, fondateur de l'Association pour le Musée d'Art Contemporain (les actuels Amis du S.M.A.K.). Geirlandt était un critique d'art renommé et un grand ami de l'artiste. Le titre ‘Esprit critique’ semble se référer principalement à l'esprit critique de Geirlandt, pour lequel Axell avait une profonde admiration. Au premier plan, nous voyons deux femmes qui se parlent. Les femmes sont un motif récurrent dans l'œuvre d'Axell. Elle peint généralement des femmes nues, libres d'esprit, aux couleurs vives, d'une sensualité étouffante. ‘Esprit critique’ est une œuvre atypique à cet égard : un portrait plutôt classique, dans lequel les femmes et leur sexualité ne sont pas centrales. Les nuances fraîches de vert et de bleu diffèrent également de ses habituelles couleurs vives ‘pop art’.
