NL - ‘Quello sguardo in quel momento’ (1998) hoort bij Garutti’s ‘Specchi Forati’-serie (1992-‘96), spiegels waarin de kunstenaar gaten perforeerde die samen het silhouet vormen van meubels die, toen hij de werken maakte, te zien waren in een spiegel in zijn woonkamer. “De spiegel hangt aan de muur en ik loop er elke dag onoplettend langs,” schreef de kunstenaar, “Hij dient om de ruimte en de dingen in die ruimte onophoudelijk te vermeerderen. Toen ik op een dag voor de spiegel stond, merkte ik dat ik het spiegelbeeld van mijn kamer kon zien, maar ook dat van de tafel, de rode stoel, het raam, een schilderij enzovoort. Ik sloot één oog en markeerde op de spiegel met een stift de hoeken van de tafel, de stoel, het raam en het schilderij. Op deze manier ‘ving’ ik in één blik de weerspiegeling van deze vertrouwde plek en van de voorwerpen die er zich op dat moment bevonden.” De perforaties in de spiegel zijn dus ankerpunten van een reële ruimte die de spiegel ooit als virtuele ruimte (non-plaats) weerspiegelde. Ook dit werk staat voor de kunstenaar symbool voor de mogelijke ontmoeting tussen hem, zijn werk en zijn publiek.

ENG - ‘Quello sguardo in quel momento’ (1998) is part of Garutti’s ‘Specchi Forati’ series (1992-96). These take the form of perforated mirrors in which the holes create the outline of a piece of furniture that, at the time of making, could be seen in his living room mirror. “The mirror hangs there on my wall, and I pass by it every day with indifference,” wrote the artist “It infallibly, incessantly functions to multiply the space and the things in that space. Standing before it, one day I noticed that I could see the reflection of my room, the table, the red chair, the window, a painting hung on the wall, and other things. I closed one eye and with a marker I traced on the mirror the edges of the table, the chair, the window and the painting: I simply captured, with just one single gaze, the reflection of that familiar place and of those objects in that moment.” The perforations are the anchor points, therefore, of a real space that becomes a virtual one (non-place) when reflected in the mirror. The artist also sees this work as symbolic of the potential encounters between himself, his work and his audience.

FR - ‘Quello sguardo in quel momento’ (1998) fait partie de la série de Garutti ‘Specchi Forati’ (1992-’96) dans lesquels l’artiste perfora des trous qui forment ensemble la silhouette de meubles que l’on pouvait voir dans son living lorsqu’il créait les œuvres. “Le miroir pend au mur et je passe devant tous les jours sans y prêter attention,” écrit l’artiste. “Il sert à multiplier sans cesse l’espace et les objets dans cet endroit. Alors que je me trouvais un jour devant le miroir, j’ai remarqué que je pouvais voir le reflet de la pièce, mais aussi celui de la table, la chaise rouge, la fenêtre, une peinture, etc. J’ai fermé un œil et j’ai marqué au feutre sur le miroir les coins de la table, la chaise, la fenêtre et la peinture. J’ai ainsi ‘capté’ en un seul regard le reflet de cette pièce familière et des objets qui s’y trouvaient à ce moment-là.” Les perforations dans le miroir sont donc des points d’ancrage d’un espace réel qui refléta un jour le miroir comme espace virtuel (non-lieu). Pour l’artiste, cette œuvre symbolise également la possible rencontre entre lui-même, son œuvre et son public.
