NL - ‘Visual Therapy – dedicated to Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen’ (1986) werd gerealiseerd voor Jan Hoets tentoonstelling ‘Chambres d’Amis’ in 1986. De installatie combineerde lokale materialen met voorwerpen verbonden aan de toenmalige Amerikaanse geopolitieke actualiteit en kan worden ‘gelezen’ als een associatief visueel gedicht. Zo staat de plant symbool voor de ‘levensboom’ en de schommel voor ‘de mens die almaar heen en weer schommelt’. In de titel suggereert ‘Visual Therapy’ dat dit kunstwerk een therapeutische uitwerking heeft. De verwijzing naar ‘Archbishop Hunthausen’ wortelt in de Amerikaanse politiek tijdens de Koude Oorlog en de rakettencrisis van de jaren ’80. De aartsbisschop probeerde burgers te sensibiliseren voor de gevaren van kernwapens en riep op om geen belastingen meer te betalen als protest tegen de aankoop ervan. Het feit dat de poëtische, therapeutische en politieke boodschap van deze installatie letterlijk vanaf een idyllisch, standaard parkbankje kunnen worden beschouwd, versterkt de ironische uitstraling van het geheel.
ENG - ‘Visual Therapy – dedicated to Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen’ (1986) was realised for Jan Hoet’s exhibition ‘Chambres d’Amis’ in 1986. The installation combined local materials with objects related to contemporaneous American geopolitical affairs and can be ‘read’ as an associative visual poem. For example, the plant symbolises the ‘tree of life’ and the swing ‘the man who sways back and forth, over and over again’. The ‘Visual Therapy’ of the title suggests that this artwork has a therapeutic effect. The reference to ‘Archbishop Hunthausen’ is rooted within American Cold War politics and the missile crisis of the 1980s. The archbishop endeavoured to raise public awareness of the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for a tax boycott as a protest against their purchase. The fact that the poetic, therapeutic and political message of this installation can be seen, quite literally, from an idyllic, run-of the-mill park bench reinforces the ironic aura of the ensemble.

L’installation combinait des matériaux locaux avec des objets liés à l’actualité géopolitique américaine de l’époque et peut être ‘lue’ comme un poème visuel associatif. C’est ainsi que la plante symbolise ‘l’arbre de vie’ et la balançoire ‘l’homme qui se balance sans cesse en avant et en arrière’. Le titre ‘Visual Therapy’ suggère que cette œuvre d’art a un effet thérapeutique. La référence à ‘Archbishop Hunthausen’ est enracinée dans la politique américaine pendant la Guerre froide et la crise des missiles dans les années ’80. L’archevêque tenta de sensibiliser les citoyens aux dangers des armes nucléaires et lança un appel à ne plus payer d’impôts en guise de protestation contre leur achat. Le fait que le message poétique, thérapeutique et politique de cette installation peut être littéralement perçu depuis un banc de parc standard et idyllique renforce le rayonnement ironique de l’ensemble.
