Vedran Kopljar (b. 1991 in Slavonski Brod, Croatia) is fascinated by the different ways in which meaning can be generated between an art object and its viewer. Under the guise of the ‘Plank Communication Center’ he investigates the potential meaning of his enduring relationship with the characteristic ‘plank’ works of the American artist John McCracken.
In May 2019, Kopljar had his first physical encounter with a work by McCracken: the red plank entitled ‘Center’ (1989), which belongs to the S.M.A.K. collection. He subsequently developed his research centre further with, among other things, new encounters with plank works in New York and an exhibition in Ghent.
