NL – Een ventilator staat op een met pigment bezoedeld dekbed en twee bevuilde hoofdkussens. Aan de ventilator hangen twee kippenpoten en reepjes textiel die mee bungelen op de wind van het apparaat. Met deze mysterieuze combinatie van gevonden voorwerpen prikkelt Brey onze fantasie en nodigt hij ons uit om te associëren. De kunstenaar omschrijft de voorwerpen als ‘mythical readymades’, alledaagse dingen die met betekenis werden opgeladen. Ze komen ook vaak voor in de Afro-Cubaanse Santeria-religie, een mengvorm van de katholieke en de traditionele Afrikaanse heiligenverering. Zo ziet Brey de luchtverplaatsing die de ventilator veroorzaakt als een metafoor voor ontheemding, iets waaraan iedere niet-westerling ten prooi viel (en valt) in de westerse wereld.

Brey stimulates our imagination with this mysterious combination of found objects and invites us to make associations. He describes the objects as ‘mythical readymades’, everyday things that are given a meaning. They also appear frequently in the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion, a hybrid of the Catholic and traditional African worship of saints. Brey thus sees the movement of air caused by the fan as a metaphor for displacement, something to which every non-Westerner has been (and still is) prey in the Western world.

FR - Un ventilateur est posé sur une couette maculée de pigment et deux oreillers sales. Deux pattes de poulet et des bandelettes de textile, accrochées au ventilateur, sont entraînées par le vent de l’appareil. Brey excite notre fantaisie avec cette mystérieuse combinaison d’objets trouvés et nous invite à créer des associations. L’artiste décrit les objets comme mythical readymades, des objets de tous les jours chargés de sens. Ils apparaissent aussi souvent dans la religion afro-cubaine Santeria, une forme mixte du culte des saints catholique et africain traditionnel. C’est ainsi que Brey perçoit le déplacement d’air provoqué par le ventilateur comme une métaphore du déracinement, dont chaque non-occidental devint (et devient) la proie dans le monde occidental.
