Richard Long

Year and place of birth: 1945, Bristol, United Kingdom Location: Bristol, United Kingdom

For land art artist Richard Long, landscape is not only the medium but also the subject of his oeuvre. Initially he executed his works in nature, often in desolate places that were difficult to reach. With stones, twigs and pieces of wood, among other things, he forms lines, rectangles, circles or spirals. Long plays with the contrast between the austere forms of his works and the capricious shapes of the natural materials they contain. His rectilinear interventions stand out against the organic natural landscapes in which they are realised. After taking photographs and writing notes, Long leaves his transient works behind and surrenders them to nature and its erosive effects.
