Chasing the Blue Train

NL – ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ is een installatie met imposante vleugelpiano’s, een berg steenkool en een blauwe miniatuurtrein die door dit vreemde landschap kronkelt, op de tonen van Afro-Amerikaanse jazz van John Coltrane en Thelonious Monk. De titel is een samentrekking van twee titels van platen van Coltrane. Het treinspoor en de steenkool verwijzen naar de beruchte A-metrolijn die Brooklyn met de New Yorkse ‘zwarte’ wijk Harlem verbond. Ze verwijzen ook naar de crisis van 1920-’30, waarin duizenden Afro-Amerikanen de VS doorkruisten om in de steenkoolmijnen te werken. Naast de bruine en zwarte concertvleugels telt de installatie één witte vleugel. De kunstenaar verwijst ermee naar de dominantie van de rijke blanke minderheid over de arme zwarte meerderheid. ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ is een ode aan de jazz van Coltrane en Monk en tegelijk een kritiek op de uitbuiting en deportatie van zwarte slaven in de context van de ontginning van de Amerikaanse steenkoolmijnen.

ENG – ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ is an installation comprising impressive grand pianos, a mountain of coal and a blue miniature train that meanders through this strange landscape to the notes of Afro-American jazz by John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. The title is a contraction of two titles of Coltrane's records. The train track and the coal refer to the infamous A metro line that connected Brooklyn to the New York 'black' district of Harlem. They also refer to the crisis of 1920-’30, in which thousands of Afro-Americans traversed the US to work in the coal mines. Besides the brown and black concert pianos the installation includes a single white one. The artist uses it to refer to the dominance of the rich, white minority over the poor, black majority. ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ is simultaneously an ode to the jazz of Coltrane and Monk and a criticism of the exploitation and deportation of black slaves in the context of mining the American coal mines.

FR - ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ est une installation composée d’imposants pianos à queue, d’un monticule de charbon et d’un train miniature bleu qui serpente à travers ce paysage étrange, aux sons du jazz afro-américain de John Coltrane et Thelonious Monk. Le titre est la contraction entre deux titres de disques de Coltrane. La voie ferrée et le charbon évoquent la célèbre ligne de métro A qui reliait Brooklyn et Harlem, le quartier ‘noir’ de New York. Ils évoquent également la crise de 1920-’30, lorsque des milliers d’Afro-Américains traversèrent les Etats-Unis pour aller travailler dans les mines de charbon. Outre les pianos à queue brun et noir, l’installation comportait aussi un seul piano à queue blanc. L’artiste renvoit ainsi à la domination de la riche minorité blanche sur la pauvre majorité noire. ‘Chasing the Blue Train’ est une ode au jazz de Coltrane et Monk, ainsi qu’une critique de l’exploitation et la déportation d’esclaves noirs dans le cadre de l’exploitation des mines de charbon en Amérique.
