NL – ‘Eventail (I)’ (1986) is een mooi voorbeeld van Jan Vercruysses uitgepuurde sculpturale taal met verwijzingen naar schilder- en beeldhouwkunst. Het werk bestaat uit een monumentaal leeg, zwart kader dat pontificaal oprijst achter drie gouden sokkels. De kunstenaar presenteert met deze compositie de afwezigheid van de kunst als een zelfstandig kunstwerk. Hij drukt de idee uit dat kunst slechts naar zichzelf verwijst en niet naar haar functie binnen en tegenover de maatschappij. ‘Eventail (I)’ werd aan S.M.A.K. geschonken door de Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (de huidige Vrienden v/h S.M.A.K.), naar aanleiding van de opening van het museum in 1999.
ENG – ‘Eventail (I)’ (1986) is a good example of Jan Vercruysse’s pared-down sculptural language with allusions to painting and sculpture. The work consists of a monumental empty, black frame that rises up ceremoniously behind three golden plinths. With this composition, the artist presents the absence of art as a stand-alone artwork. He expresses the idea that art only alludes to itself and not to its function within and toward society. ‘Eventail (I)’ was donated to S.M.A.K. by the Society for the Museum of Contemporary Art (the present-day Friends of S.M.A.K.), to mark the opening of the museum in 1999.
FR – ‘Eventail (I)’ (1986) est une belle illustration du langage sculptural épuré de Jan Vercruysse, avec de fréquentes références à la peinture et à la sculpture. L’œuvre se compose d’un cadre monumental noir vide, qui s’élève avec ostentation derrière trois socles dorés. À travers cette composition, l’artiste présente l’absence de l’art en tant qu’œuvre d’art autonome. Il exprime l’idée que l’art renvoie uniquement à lui-même et non à sa fonction au sein de la société et vis-à-vis de celle-ci. ‘Eventail (I)’ a été offert au S.M.A.K. par l’Association pour le Musée d’Art contemporain (aujourd’hui les Amis du S.M.A.K.), à l’occasion de l’ouverture du musée en 1999.
