Miss Nice

NL - In 1963 creëerde Raysse een reeks variaties op het vrouwenportret. Meestal koos hij voor anonieme modellen die hij uit tijdschriften knipte. Soms ging hij uit van bekende kunstwerken van onder meer Cranach, Ingres en Prud’hon. ‘Miss Nice’ vormt hierop een uitzondering en is een portret van Raysses echtgenote France. Tegelijkertijd was het een eerbetoon aan zijn geboorteland dat hij een jaar eerder had verlaten voor de VS. Ook al portretteerde de kunstenaar hier zijn eigen vrouw, toch straalt ‘Miss Nice’ de afstandelijke sfeer uit van een anoniem vrouwenportret. Door het te overschilderen in contrasterend groen en rood en er een oranjerode achtergrond aan te geven, gaf Raysse het portret het karakter van een object. De vlakheid van het schilderij steekt af tegen de plastic roos die op het werk is bevestigd.

ENG - In 1963, Raysse created a series of variations on the female portrait. He mostly opted for anonymous models which he cut out of magazines. Sometimes he would base them on famous artworks by figures such as Cranach, Ingres and Prud’hon. ‘Miss Nice’, a portrait of Raysse’s wife, France, was an exception to the rule. At the same time, it was a tribute to the country of his birth, which he had left the previous year for the US. Although the artist was portraying his own wife here, ‘Miss Nice’ creates the distant impression of an anonymous female portrait. By overpainting it in contrasting green and red, and giving it an orange-red background, Raysse made the portrait feel like an object. The flatness of the painting contrasts with the plastic rose that has been affixed to the work.

FR - En 1963, Raysse créa une série de variations sur le portrait de femmes. Il choisissait le plus souvent des modèles anonymes qu’il découpait dans des magazines, mais parfois il s’inspirait d’œuvres d’art connues, entre autres de Cranach, Ingres et Prud’hon. ‘Miss Nice’ est une exception, puisqu’elle est un portrait de l’épouse de Raysse, France. C’était également un hommage à sa patrie qu’il avait quitté un an plus tôt pour les Etats-Unis. Même si l’artiste a dressé le portrait de son épouse, ‘Miss Nice’ dégage l’atmosphère distante d’un portrait de femme anonyme. Raysse donna au portrait le caractère d’un objet en le surpeignant dans un contraste de vert et de rouge et en y ajoutant un fond rouge orangé. Le caractère plat de la peinture tranche avec la rose en plastique fixée sur l’œuvre.
