NL – In ‘Phat Free’ wandelt een man in het donker door de straten van een stad, terwijl hij een metalen emmer voor zich uit schopt. De video is gebaseerd op een performance die Hammons op straat (mogelijk in New York) uitvoerde in 1995. ‘Phat Free’ is een allusie op ‘Fat Free’ of ‘vetvrij’, waarmee gezonde voedingswaren worden aangeprijsd. ‘Phat’ betekende in het dialect van de Afro-Amerikaanse gemeenschap in de jaren ’80 en ’90 ook ‘cool’, ‘sexy’ of ‘geweldig’. Het woord komt geregeld voor in de krachtige baslijnen en drumbeats van hiphop. Hammons lijkt ermee te verwijzen naar de ritmische geluiden in deze video. Door het ontbreken van beeld in het eerste deel én door de vage connotaties van het woord ‘phat’, is het niet evident om dit werk helder te interpreteren. Deze weerbarstigheid is niet toevallig: Hammons werkt, naar eigen zeggen, liever voor toevallige passanten op straat dan voor een elitair kunstpubliek.

The video is based on a performance Hammons gave in the street (possibly in New York) in 1995. ‘Phat Free’ is an allusion to ‘Fat Free’, used to refer to healthy food. In the dialect of the Afro-American community during the Eighties and Nineties ‘phat’ also meant ‘cool’, ‘sexy’ or ‘great’. The word regularly crops up in the powerful bass lines and drum beats of hip hop. Hammons appears to refer to the rhythmic sounds in this video. Due to the lack of imagery in the first section and the vague connotations of the word 'phat', it is not easy to interpret this work unambiguously. This obstinacy is not coincidental: Hammons admits that he prefers to work for random passers-by on the street than for an elite art audience.

La vidéo est basée sur une performance réalisée par Hammons dans la rue (sans doute à New York) en 1995. ‘Phat Free’ fait allusion à ‘Fat Free’ ou ‘sans matières grasses’ pour vanter des aliments sains. ‘Phat’ signifiait aussi ‘cool’, ‘sexy’ ou ‘terrible’ dans le dialecte de la communauté afro-américaine des années ’80 et ’90. Ce mot apparaît régulièrement dans les morceaux de basse et de batterie du hiphop. Hammons semble ainsi évoquer les sons rythmiques dans cette vidéo. L’absence d’images dans la première partie, ainsi que les vagues connotations du mot ‘phat’ ne permettent pas d’interpréter cette oeuvre de manière claire. Cette rigidité n’est pas le fait du hasard: selon ses propres dires, Hammons préfère travailler pour des passants fortuits dans la rue que pour un public d’art élitiste.
