At the end of 2008 Michel François had received carte blanche from the S.M.A.K. to determine the exhibition programme in two galleries for more than a year.
François chose two identical exhibition rooms and named his project Faux Jumeaux (false twins). He asked 15 people to each select two works of art which, although very similar with regard to form or material, were created independently. Which similarities or differences between the two works come to light when ‘mirrored’ in the two identical galleries?
Philippe Van Cauteren added yet another "Faux Jumeaux" to the selection of Hans Theys and Frank Maes with Boite-en-valise (1941) by Marcel Duchamp and Fragments, box #3 (2005-2007) by Ivan Moudov. In his suitcase Duchamp collected miniature reproductions of his own work. We see Fountain (1917), Nu descandant l'escalier, n°2 (1912) and other works all brought together. Fragments, #3 on the other hand is a collection of fragments of works of art Moudov stole from various museums and galleries in Europe. These include bits of work by Pascale Martine Tayou, Thomas Schütte, Paul McCarthy, John Baldessari and others. The act of ‘stealing’ placed Moudov in a very vulnerable position. Once he put the bits together, all of which could be replaced in the original works, and presented this in the suitcase as his own work, the danger appeared to have passed.
