At the end of 2008 Michel François had received carte blanche from the S.M.A.K. to determine the exhibition programme in two galleries for more than a year.
François chose two identical exhibition rooms and named his project Faux Jumeaux (false twins). He asked 15 people to each select two works of art which, although very similar with regard to form or material, were created independently. Which similarities or differences between the two works come to light when ‘mirrored’ in the two identical galleries?
Jean-Paul Jacquet is last in line and demolishes the wall that has separated the Faux Jumeaux for more than a year. The residue of this wall remains in the room as a witness. In the centre is the work Untitled (March 5th) #2 by Felix Gonzalez-Torres installed. The work consists of two light bulbs suspended against the wall, just touching one another subtle and gentle. This work is one of the first ‘light’ installations Torres became known for. What makes it so strong is the universal language that transcends it's autobiographical characteristics.
