Liliane Vertessen | Lionize, 2024
10 + 2 AP, 50 x 70 photo print with plastic leaves and handwritten title, framed by the artist
Liliane Vertessen (b. 1952, Leopoldsburg) has been known since the 1970s for her staged self-portraits for which she takes on the roles of various fictional characters. Usually scantily clad and in a provocative pose, she plays various types of women (vamp, lolita, diva, dominatrix...), as performed in the film and advertising world. Her photos do not express victimisation, but rather empowerment and self-awareness. Vertessen combines her photographs with bright neon lights, mirrors and sensual accessories, such as glitter, plush, paille and feathers. In doing so, she evokes the phantasmagoria of strip clubs and brothels, where her gaze crosses that of the viewer in an endless vortex of seduction and desire, exhibitionism and voyeurism. Sometimes Vertessen also uses her photographs in larger, spatial installations.
