Research project on the Society of the Museum of Contemporary Art from 1957 to 1964

Geirlandt

In 2017, a number of Master students, supervised by Koen Brams, will research the early days of the genesis of the museum.

In 2017, the Studio will carry out research into the history of the Society of the Museum of Contemporary Art from 1957 to 1964. This study will in the first instance look at the founding of the Society on the initiative of the lawyer Karel Geirlandt. The activities of the Society from 1957 to 1964 will also be examined. This will include the policy documents, the programme (exhibitions, talks and other activities) and the artworks acquired. Lastly, the study will look not only at the Society’s chief objective – the establishment of a Museum of Contemporary Art, later to become S.M.A.K. – but also the Society’s role in the development of the artistic landscape in Belgium and Europe from 1957 to 1964.
