Talk on Gerhard Richter | Birgit Pelzer - Sunday 18 February - 3 pm

Gerhard Richter Woudstuk 1

During the exhibition Gerhard Richter | About Painting S.M.A.K. and Herbert Foundation are organizing lectures to enlighten the work of Richter.

Whereas doubt is one of the core elements of Richter’s oeuvre, in the act of painting he nevertheless displays great certainty. His painting, so multifaceted and mobile in its research into how we look at things, ultimately leads to a coherence that one cannot ignore. In her talk, Birgit Pelzer deals with this thread, this core, this unchanging purpose in his practice: defining a visual object that can enter into an exchange with what is real and its effects.

Birgit Pelzer studied philosophy at the universities of Louvain-la-Neuve, Cracow and Heidelberg. She was a professor of modern aesthetics and philosophy at the Sint-Lucas and Erg colleges of art in Brussels. She has published widely on individual artists including Michael Asher, Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Lucio Fontana, Isa Genzken, Dan Graham, Candida Höfer, John Knight, Louise Lawle, Gerhard Richter and Lawrence Weiner, and also on such topics as literature, feminism and contemporary art in monographs, a collection (Herman & Nicole Daled), catalogues and a magazine (Interfunktionen).
