NL - Anna Boghiguian maakte voor haar solotentoonstelling ‘Gardens of Egypt’ in Caïro in 2010 een reeks schilderijen met tuinen en bloemen. Net zoals het dagdagelijkse, soms brute leven in de straten van Caïro haar fascineert, voelt Boghiguian zich ook aangetrokken door de schoonheid en meditatieve rust van tuinen. Hier toont ze een aantal werken met rozen die deel uitmaakten van genoemde tentoonstelling.
Rozen op doek worden al snel geassocieerd met romantiek of zelfs kitsch, maar in het werk van Boghiguian bezitten ze de kracht en overtuiging die ook terug te vinden is in haar politiek geïnspireerde werk. De kunstenaar maakt rozen tastbaar met trefzekere verfstroken en prachtige, expressionistische kleuren, die ze aanbrengt op een morsig oppervlak van olieverf, zand en ander korrelig gruis.
In deze ruimte combineert Anna Boghiguian haar schilderijen van rozen met een ruimtelijke installatie van echte rozenstruikjes op verspreide perken. Op deze manier creëert ze een poëtische ruimte, waarin ze ook ‘Woman in Mouled’, een schilderij van een gesluierde vrouw, opneemt. Hiermee wil ze duiden op de rijke, innerlijke ‘tuinen’ die vrouwen binnenin zichzelf weten te ontwikkelen.

Anna Boghiguian made a series of paintings with gardens and flowers for her solo exhibition ‘Gardens of Egypt’ in Cairo in 2010. Just as the daily, sometimes brutal life in the streets of Cairo fascinates her, Boghiguian is also attracted by the beauty and meditative tranquillity of gardens. Here she shows a number of works with roses that were part of the exhibition.
Roses on canvas are immediately associated with romance or even kitsch, but in Boghiguian’s work they possess the same power and conviction that can be found in her politically inspired work. The artist makes roses tangible via precise brushstrokes and beautiful, expressionistic colours, which she applies to a sparse surface of oil paint, sand and other gritty material.
In this space, Anna Boghiguian combines her paintings of roses with a spatial installation of real rose bushes on scattered beds. She thus creates a poetic space, one in which she also includes ‘Woman in Mouled’, a painting of a veiled woman. Here, Boghiguian alludes to the rich, inner ‘gardens’ that women know how to develop within themselves.

Pour son exposition solo ‘Gardens of Egypt’ au Caire en 2010, Anna Boghiguian réalisa une série de peintures avec des jardins et des fleurs. Alors que la vie quotidienne, parfois brutale, dans les rues du Caire la fascine, Boghiguian est également attirée par la beauté et la tranquillité méditative des jardins. Ici, elle nous montre un certain nombre d'œuvres comprenant des roses et faisant partie de l’exposition mentionnée ci-dessus.
Même si les roses sur toile sont facilement associées au romantisme ou même au kitsch, dans l'œuvre de Boghiguian, celle-ci possèdent la puissance et la conviction que l'on retrouve également dans son travail d'inspiration politique. L'artiste rend les roses tangibles à l’aide de bandes de peinture précises et de magnifiques couleurs expressionnistes, qu'elle applique sur une surface clairsemée de peinture à l'huile, de sable et d'autres grains.
Dans cet espace, Anna Boghiguian combine ses peintures de roses avec une installation spatiale de véritables rosiers sur des lits épars. Elle crée ainsi un espace poétique, dans lequel elle inclut également ‘Woman in Mouled’, une peinture d'une femme voilée. Elle veut ainsi mettre en évidence les riches ‘jardins’ intérieurs que les femmes ont la capacité de développer.
